Phil Parkinson can complete his Wrexham transfer puzzle by signing a striker and he should use Birmingham City’s signing of Alfie May as inspiration.

In recent weeks, it’s become very clear that for Wrexham to complete their transfer business, they only need to sign a lethal striker.

Wrexham have quality cover in all positions; for instance, Arthur Okonkwo and Callum Burton are duelling for a place in between the sticks, meanwhile, Phil Parkinson is spoilt for choice in midfield.

The narrative is completely different when looking at his forwards however, with Parkinson needing to get rid of multiple players, including Sam Dalby, Jake Bickerstaff and Billy Waters before the window slams shut.

Wrexham currently have veteran duo Steven Fletcher and Ollie Palmer as options alongside Paul Mullin and Jack Marriott.

However, if the Welsh outfit have ambitions of challenging for promotion, they need extra firepower, perhaps a clinical partner for Mullin once he returns.

Wrexham need to use Birmingham City’s signing of Alfie May as an example

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have already smashed Wrexham’s transfer record with the signing of Ollie Rathbone, who reportedly cost around £500,000.

The Hollywood owners showed ambition by dipping their hands into their pockets but they must do so once more to land a striker, perhaps taking inspiration from Birmingham City’s signing of Alfie May.

May goal machine at League One level and last summer, he was linked with a move to Wrexham, but he instead joined Charlton Athletic on the back of netting 48 goals in two campaigns at Cheltenham.

The prolific finisher would continue his rich vein of scoring with the Addicks, finishing the 2023/24 season as the division’s top scorer with an eye-watering 23 goals in 43 appearances.

May has since sealed what is a bargain £775,000 move to Birmingham, who have got themselves a guaranteed source of goals having already scored on his debut against Reading.

Wrexham are currently in for a similarly prolific striker and they should use their rivals’ transfer for May as inspiration.

Michael Smith is perfect for what Wrexham need

On Sunday, it was reported that Wrexham were in talks to sign Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith, with the Racecourse Ground described as his ‘most likely’ destination.

Smith has dropped down the pecking order at Hillsborough with players such as Ike Ugbo, Josh Windass and Jamal Lowe ahead of him.

The 32-year-old did score off the bench against Plymouth Argyle last weekend while following that up with a start against Hull City on Wednesday night, as the Owls booked their place in round two of the Carabao Cup.

Smith’s involvement across the last two matches could have put Parkinson’s chance of landing him in jeopardy however, the Wrexham boss can offer him something Danny Rohl can’t – and that is guaranteed football.

In the last few League One campaigns, the Englishman has been one of the most prolific forwards in the third tier, producing a 16-goal and an 18-goal haul in 2021/22 and 2022/23.

It’s such returns that saw the powerful striker get described as ‘magic’ and he can continue casting spells on his opposition by signing for Wrexham while forming a devastating partnership with Mullin.

Smith is ultimately the perfect striker Parkinson is looking for; he’s strong, dominant in the air and knows where the net is. To put it simply, signing Smith could be a ‘game changer’ in Wrexham’s promotion pursuit.
