Wrexham owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds deserve another pat on the back as a fresh announcement emerges.

Wrexham have executed a near-perfect strategy across the board this summer.

In terms of their recruitment, Phil Parkinson has signed six new players, including two goalkeepers, three defenders and a central midfielder.

The Reds have also offloaded eight of their first-team players, most notably Luke Young and Ben Tozer, who have both since joined Cheltenham and Forest Green Rovers respectively.

Wrexham are also a well-oiled machine in the contract department. Despite making a meal of Jordan Tunncliffles’s contract, the Welsh outfit have shown an appetite to keep hold of their best players, with Max Cleworth, George Evans and Tom O’Connor all signing new deals.

Wrexham hand James McClean a new contract till 2026

On Wednesday, midfielder James McClean became the latest player to sign a new contract at Wrexham.

It’s a decision that came as a surprise to many as the 35-year-old only saw his contract extended this summer but now a further year has been added on, taking him till 2026.

Handing the Irishman another season on top of his current deal just shows how highly he’s thought of at the Racecourse Ground, with Parkinson dubbing his impact last term as ‘excellent’.

The 100-times Ireland international – who has played at wing-back, in midfield and also up front in his time at Wrexham – will play a vital role for the Reds in League One.

“I’m obviously delighted,” McClean said after signing the contract. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve really enjoyed it and to be given the opportunity to continue that for another two seasons is something I’m really looking forward to.

“It’s been successful so far and hopefully there’s more success to come over the next two seasons.”

McElhenney and Reynolds deserve credit for handing McClean a new contract

Very rarely do outfield players at the age of 35 get given contracts that are longer than a year but the fact McClean is one of them just underlines his importance.

Previously described as the hardest-working player he’s ever seen by Ben Foster, McClean keeps himself in ridiculous shape and that is why he performs like he’s in his mid-twenties.

The veteran hardly ever gets injured and his availability is only let down by his tendency to overstep the line on the pitch and receive suspensions.

Other than that, he’s always willing to play multiple different positions and in the pre-season draw against Chelsea, he was even used as a striker.

Despite being one of the oldest players in the squad, he’s still one of the most important and Wrexham’s owners deserve immense credit for giving him a new deal.

They know how much he’s adored by the fans, and they now get to see him play in Red for at least two more years.
