Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds must make a conscious effort to tie down their talented youngsters to new contracts and one of those is Max Cleworth.
Max Cleworth’s progression in a Wrexham shirt over the years has been a joy to behold.
From making his Reds debut in a 2-2 draw against Solihull Moors at the beginning of the 2021/22 season to becoming an integral part of Phil Parkinson’s plans in League Two, the 21-year-old has developed into a “ridiculous talent”.
Cleworth made a slow start to life in the fourth tier after playing 21 times in last year’s promotion season, but now he’s accustomed to the physical demands required, he’s cemented his spot in defence having played in 12 of Wrexham’s last 14 matches.
Despite his age, the youngster has risen to prominence as an important player under Parkinson.
Not only has he matured as a ball-playing defender but his ability to read the game and show his combative nature against opposing attackers has been brilliant.
He boasts an 84% pass completion in his own half and averages 2.5 tackles per game while winning an impressive 71% of his duels.
Cleworth has reached levels this season that should reward him with a new contract.

Cleworth last signed a new contract at the end of 2022, keeping him at the STōK Cae Ras till June 2025.
With his contract expiring next year, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds must prioritise giving the youngster an improved deal.
Many believe he is capable of playing higher up the football league and supporters would love that to be with Wrexham.
However, if he continues developing rapidly, he’s only going to catch the eye of those clubs and that is a prompt to offer him improved terms.
Not only does it protect the Reds from losing one of their prized possessions on the cheap, Cleworth committing his long-term future to Wrexham would be excellent news.
The club should see him as a long-term asset and perhaps captain, especially with Ben Tozer reaching the end of his career.
For Wrexham to replace someone of Cleworth’s age and potential, it would cost them millions in the transfer market and they could save that money by putting fresh terms on the table.
That way, the ball is in their court and they can dictate a fee to any club attempting to sign him.
But most importantly, supporters get to watch their “star in the making” continue his ascent towards the top with them.
