Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney must now know what will stop Wrexham winning promotion in 24/25 – they can fix it

Wrexham are looking to book their place in the Championship for the 2025/26 season.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham in 2021 and have gone on to enjoy tremendous success with the club.

The Red Dragons, after a 15-year stint, finally won promotion from the National League in the 2022/23 season.

Upon their return to the EFL, the Welsh side managed to finish second in League Two, earning them a spot in League One for the 2024/25 campaign.

This season is by far and away Wrexham’s biggest test under the American owners, however, with the battle for promotion very tight.

Two of the club’s promotion rivals were in action on Tuesday and that game has highlighted the biggest problem facing the Red Dragons in their hunt for a place in next season’s Championship.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney know why Wrexham may not get promoted

Wycombe Wanderers and Huddersfield Town clashed at Adams Park on January 8th.

The Terriers came out on top in that match thanks to a 15th-minute strike from Herbie Kane.

The result leaves Wycombe second in the League One table and still ahead of Wrexham despite being on the same points.

Now, it’s become clear that Parkinson’s side are not scoring enough goals this season and this will hamper their promotion push.

Matt Bloomfield’s men have played the same number of games as Wrexham and conceded more goals, yet their goal difference – along with first-place Birmingham City’s – is much better.

With the battle for promotion so tight, goal difference could well play a crucial role come the end of 2024/25 and as things stands, Wrexham’s lack of goals looks set to cost them.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney can solve Wrexham goal problem

Luckily for the recently-promoted side, the January transfer window is now upon us and their lack of goals compared to their promotion rivals can be addressed.

Patrick Bamford has been linked to Wrexham but Rob and Ryan would likely have to break the bank and their wage structure to land the Leeds United man.

However, if they are to truly compete with the likes of Birmingham, who smashed the League One transfer record over the summer, big spending will be required.

Bamford’s game time in 2024/25 has been limited but he would surely dominate the third tier if Wrexham are willing to stump up the cash required.
