Wrexham are keen to continue strengthening the squad with the club preparing for its first League One campaign in 19 years.

Preparations are well underway in North Wales with several new faces arriving at Wrexham.

Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been keen to support manager Phil Parkinson in the window so far with League One set to be the biggest test in quality for the club since the takeover.

There may be outgoings later in the window as the squad size is rather large currently.

However, key additions will continue to be linked to the Racecourse before the season begins.

The former Sunderland manager has already added goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, Leicester City defender Lewis Brunt, and former Charlton Athletic captain George Dobson to his side this summer.

The 56-year-old coach has been keen to add quality all over the pitch in anticipation of the required step-up in quality in the coming season.

With the club still active in the market, one key transfer strategy will help Wrexham be competitive in League One.

Phil Parkinson aiming for strength-in-depth in this transfer window

It is clear by the business already completed that the former Bradford City manager is aiming to upgrade some of his options in the squad.

Signing a number-one goalkeeper in Okonkwo was his main priority this summer. After confirming that deal in June, the club has moved to quality additions in other departments of the squad.

Brunt and Dobson will expect to be part of a regular XI under Parkinson, which provides competition for places, with the likes of Andy Cannon fighting for their place.

This is an important step for Wrexham to take with clubs like Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town having stronger squads to compete with.

This transfer strategy is vital with tough fixtures throughout the campaign the English coach will need to turn to his squad players when he needs to rotate.

Upgrading the level of quality on the bench will only help the club in its goals to succeed next season.

Where extra depth is needed in the Wrexham squad

Wrexham have improved their defensive options with Brunt signing a three-year deal at the club.

Reinforcements in the back line were needed with the summer departures of Ben Tozer and Aaron Hayden.

Parkinson now has several quality defenders in Eoghan O’Connell, Will Boyle, Max Cleworth, and Tom O’Connor all available to compete with the former Leicester City defender for a starting place in the Wrexham backline.

Dobson’s reunion with the Red Dragons’s boss has added vital leadership and quality in the midfield. Last season George Evans, Elliot Lee, and Andy Cannon were the preferred three that would regularly start.

The former Charlton star is expected to become a starter with his wealth of League One experience with over 250 games under his belt.

James Jones and Jordan Davies are also fighting for minutes at the Racecourse and it will be interesting to see if Parkinson adds any further additions to his midfield.

One area that the manager could look to strengthen is the striking department.

Despite having various options up front, the club could look to upgrade in that area with a striker who has experience playing at a higher level.

Wrexham sensation Paul Mullin will continue to be the club’s biggest threat, but if his injury issues re-occur, the manager may want an upgrade ready to help continue the goal threat.
