Wrexham’s urgency to strengthen their squad would have heightened following a dismal display against Sydney FC.

Wrexham suffered their first defeat of the pre-season tour to Australia going down 2-1 to a spirited Sydney side, Callum Burton will be disappointed with his efforts for the winning goal.

Phil Parkinson saw his side put in a lacklustre showing and Ollie Rathbone’s injury concern has added to the manager’s problems with the midfielder heading for an x-ray on an ankle injury.

Fans are now calling for efforts to be stepped up in the transfer market and Wrexham are interested in John Egan. Wrexham Insider has looked at the potential impact that Egan’s arrival would have on the current squad.

Winners from a potential John Egan transfer to Wrexham

Phil Parkinson

Parkinson has made no secret that he wants to add some more experience to his squad this summer and preferably players with Premier League exploits on their CV.

Egan has just that from his time with Sheffield United and with 36 caps for Ireland under his belt, the defender has proven himself at the very highest level.

The Wrexham boss is looking for someone to fill the void in the middle of the back three with inexperienced duo Max Cleworth and Lewis Brunt either side.

The Irish defender is excellent in the air and a great communicator, he would be the perfect foil at the heart of the defence.

James McClean

James McClean has been one of Wrexham’s most impressive players upon his return for pre-season and will lead the side into the Championship campaign.

McClean is great friends with Egan having spent time in the national team together and will relish having another leader join the ranks in North Wales.

Results may prove challenging for Wrexham next season and McClean will want other experienced voices around him to rally the troops if times get tough at the club.

Max Cleworth

Cleworth is ready to continue his remarkable progression from Wrexham’s academy in the National League to starring in the second tier.

He was voted players’ player of the year at the Red Dragons last season and will now be looking to further enhance his reputation in the Championship.

At just 22 years of age, Cleworth will need some guidance with the step up in quality and a player such as Egan will be able to provide that.

Losers from a potential John Egan transfer to Wrexham

Eoghan O’Connell

Eoghan O’Connell has been a rock for Wrexham during his time in North Wales and was particularly impressive in their end of season run to promotion in League One.

Dominant in the air and intelligent in his reading of the game, O’Connell will be confident that he can be the man to stay at the heart of the defence next season.

However, there appears to be a nagging doubt in Parkinson’s mind over his ability to do that in the second tier and news of interest in his pal Egan will worry the Irish defender.

Should Egan arrive at the Racecourse, it is likely that O’Connell will see himself pushed out of favour in the first eleven.

Dan Scarr

Dan Scarr had to be patient for opportunities last season and will be frustrated at the links with Egan having regained his place in the side.

Scarr was excellent for the final three games of last season and would have been looking to build momentum during pre-season and the start of the new campaign.

However, with O’Connell back fit and firing and Egan’s potential arrival, Scarr could find himself back to square one and sitting on the bench once again.
