Wrexham will win promotion if Phil Parkinson heeds Rob McElhenney advice sent before crucial period

Wrexham are looking to secure another promotion under Phil Parkinson but their efforts were dealt a blow this week.

Wrexham and Wycombe Wanderers are currently battling it out to join Birmingham City as the second team to win automatic promotion.

It’s an incredibly tight fight right now, with the Chairboys having a small advantage due to their game in hand.

However, it’s Wrexham who have the easier fixtures in the coming weeks and should, on paper, have enough to clinch second place.

But as was shown against 23rd-place Cambridge United on Tuesday, playing ‘weaker’ teams doesn’t always guarantee positive results.

So, with every point from now until the final day so crucial, Phil Parkinson should be listening to advice sent by Rob McElhenney.

Phil Parkinson should listen to Rob McElhenney’s Paul Mullin advice

Wrexham have already won back-to-back promotions, managing to secure a second-place finish in League Two last season.

Like the current campaign, though, the Hollywood club had a rough start to the second half of 2023/24.

They lost three of their first five league fixtures in 2024 before dropping points in three of their following five matches.

However, in early March, when the end-of-season run-in was just getting underway, it was Paul Mullin who stepped up.

After seven games without a goal, the striker went on to score 14 goals in his last 13 matches of 2023/24 for Wrexham.

That included a hat-trick against Accrington Stanley, and following that game, McElhenney made a Mullin claim saying, ‘the more games this man plays, the bigger the club will continue to get.’

Paul Mullin still has something to offer Wrexham

That has not been the story of the season so far for the number nine, however, as he’s been left out of every League One squad since late January.

However, Mullin has been backed to return to the fold in the future by Humphrey Ker, and that time should be now.

The striker has a habit of stepping up when it really matters and as Rob mentioned, the more he plays, the bigger Wrexham can get.

Jay Rodriguez could drop out of the side for Mullin, or at the very least, he could start being named on the bench and coming on to kill off matches like Steven Fletcher is currently tasked with doing.
