Wrexham’s Phil Parkinson may be the real winner from Rangers’ decision to sack Russell Martin

Phil Parkinson has done a fine job while in charge of Wrexham, delivering a historic three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship.

He has continued that fine performance while in the second tier, as the Red Dragons are currently on an unbeaten run of four games, with their latest result being a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City.

While a worrying stat has emerged for Wrexham from this fixture, there will not be many concerns for the boss of the Welsh club, as the feeling around the Racecourse Ground is positive.

However, it was not too long ago that it was being reported that Parkinson was under pressure, with several names being linked to the Wrexham job.

Steven Gerrard linked to the vacant Rangers job

Rangers parted ways with Russell Martin after their latest draw in the Scottish Premiership, with his last game in charge of the Glasgow side coming against Falkirk.

Immediately a host of names were linked to the vacant position, including several that had been linked to the Wrexham job when Parkinson was under pressure.

Steven Gerrard has been linked with a return to Rangers after he departed the club for Aston Villa in November 2021, after he spent three years at the Scottish club.

They may explore bringing the last manager to deliver the Scottish Premiership to Rangers, and this may ease any speculation of the Liverpool legend becoming the next manager of Wrexham.

Sean Dyche is also linked to Rangers

The former Everton and Burnley manager has also been linked to the vacant role left by Russell Martin after his poor spell in Scotland.

Sean Dyche had previously been one of the options that Wrexham may have explored had they opted to relieve Phil Parkinson from his role; however, an upturn in form has made this seem like a ridiculous thought.

However, Dyche may be considered as an option for Rangers after his spell at the Toffees, with several former Everton staff now working at Rangers, linking him to the role.

Rangers now have a decision to make about who they think will be perfect to carry their club forward, with Gerrard and Dyche being favourites; however, for Wrexham and Parkinson, the removal of Martin seems to have been a brilliant piece of news to remove any lingering speculation about his job.
