Wrexham head into their EFL Trophy last-16 clash with Port Vale on a high after a last minute winner to defeat Crawley 2-1.

Rob McElhenney expressed his delight at Wrexham’s late winner as Elliot Lee came off the bench to head home a Ryan Longman cross in the dying seconds of the game.

Crawley boss Rob Elliot was furious that the goal was given after a clash involving Lee in the build up but the three points moved Wrexham back to within four points of Wycombe in the League One table.

Phil Parkinson now has an EFL Trophy tie to prepare for with the option of rotating his Wrexham squad however, there is one position that may be up for debate in the coming weeks.

Wrexham recall goalkeeper Luke McNicholas from loan spell at Rochdale

Wrexham have recalled goalkeeper Luke McNicholas from his loan spell at Rochdale, indicating the manager Parkinson is unsure about his number one in that position.

Mark Howard wore the gloves against Crawley Town after Arthur Okonkwo produced a 2/10 against Stevenage in the Wrexham player ratings.

The recall of McNicholas could suggest that Parkinson is once again considering a change between the sticks amid the uncertainty of Howard and Okonkwo.

McNicholas has made nine appearances on loan at Rochdale having spent a spell out injured with a muscular injury.

Phil Parkinson could target a goalkeeper on deadline day

With the January transfer deadline looming, the goalkeeper position is one Phil Parkinson could look to strengthen.

Okonkwo’s inconsistent form upon return from injury and Howard’s lack of first team football has already led to the recall of McNicholas but it may well be a position that Parkinson looks to add to.

The EFL Trophy would present the perfect opportunity to use McNicholas should Wrexham have an eye on introducing the 25-year-old into the fold.

Whether or not that is the plan remains to be seen but the goalkeeping position is one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
