Phil Parkinson revealed winning football matches is his ‘driving force’ behind being Wrexham manager

Speaking on season two episode fifteen of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, Parkinson was asked to reflect on his decision to become manager at the Racecourse Ground.

The Red Dragons boss has now managed over 1000 professional games but speaking in 2023, it was the people of Wrexham that motivated him to win football matches.

Parkinson stated: “I’ve been a manager 18, 19 years and it’s the first job for a while where I’ve moved into the area and I’ve enjoyed that, it’s really hit home to you how much it means.

“It is part of the culture. When you’re young, your Dad takes you to watch a football match, the crowd, the atmosphere, people remember it.

“They remember being at games as kids and watching great moments that live in their memories as much as the people actually involved in them out on the pitch or on the touchline.

“The memories and achievements are so important and you want to be remembered and I think that’s a real driving force for everybody. Football has got kind of a magic about it and what do I love most about it? It’s the accomplishment of winning.”

Phil Parkinson out to prove people wrong in the Championship with Wrexham

Parkinson’s Championship record with previous clubs does not make for great reading and he would have been relieved to get his first win of the season at The Den.

Wrexham will now be hopeful that they have assembled a squad deep enough to mount a serious challenge towards the higher reaches of the Championship.
