Wrexham are desperate for their first three points of the season as they welcome Sheffield Wednesday to the Racecourse Ground.

Despite two performances where plenty of positives could be taken, Phil Parkinson’s side have suffered back-to-back defeats at the start of the campaign.

Wrexham could match an unwanted record with defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday by losing their first three matches in the Football League for the first time since 1981.

Winning is the order of the day for the Red Dragons and Rob McElhenney knows all about the importance of that in North Wales.

Rob McElhenney wanted to bring Wrexham fans ‘hope’ and ‘optimism’ by winning football matches

Speaking on season two episode twelve of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, McElhenney described the extra importance of winning football matches he felt for the town as a whole.

Shaun Harvey revealed Rob McElhenney’s ambitions for the community as a whole during their first ever conversation and the owner has proven time and time again that he is in it for more than just results on the pitch.

McElhenney stated: “I heard a woman say, why can’t it ever be us? Why can’t we ever win? She was talking about the football club but she was talking about so much more.

“I don’t pretend to believe that just winning a football game or a football league is going to bring people everything that they ever wanted but if it brings them just at least a feeling of hope and optimism then I’m very proud of that.”

Alongside Ryan Reynolds, the owners have helped to guide the club to three successive promotions and are now looking to make their mark in the Championship.

Phil Parkinson needs a win against Sheffield Wednesday

Whilst winning has become a habit for Wrexham, they could do with rediscovering the feeling when they clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Red Dragons need that first win in the second tier to build some confidence and belief amongst the players that they do belong in the division and they can compete.

A valiant performance at Southampton deserved more than the late heartbreak they suffered and defensive lapses cost them the game against West Brom.

However, Wrexham have shown that they can cause problems going forward and must get everything right in the clash with a struggling side to get off the mark.
