Wrexham are still in the market for new signings this summer but one potential signing is now set to sign for Birmingham City instead.

Wrexham have added five signings this summer and Phil Parkinson will be delighted with the business done so far.

Not only did Wrexham sign Arthur Okonkwo to a permanent deal, but then added new goalkeeping competition in Callum Burton.

Versatile defenders Lewis Brunt and Sebastian Revan have both signed from Premier League sides and Parkinson completed a reunion with George Dobson too.

Dobson bolsters the Wrexham midfield ranks and now only knows Parkinson from his time at Sunderland, but knows the League One landscape very well.

Another midfielder may still be a target for Wrexham but Scottish talent Marc Leonard is one name to forget about.

Birmingham City to win race for Wrexham target Marc Leonard

Reports late in May suggested that Wrexham were interested in signing Leonard from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The talented midfielder impressed in two seasons on loan at Northampton Town and is now ready to leave the Seagulls permanently.

Northampton boss Jon Brady praised Leonard as an ‘outstanding’ talent and it’s no surprise to see that he has attracted major interest.

Wrexham were right in the mix and were leading the race alongside Birmingham City in June.

Reports began to suggest that Birmingham were closing in on a deal and it now looks like Wrexham have missed out.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano claims that Birmingham have agreed a deal with Brighton for Leonard’s signature.

The Blues will pay around £500,000 with add-ons and have already completed a medical with Leonard, meaning a deal is ‘set to be signed’.

Leonard is now all set for a move to the West Midlands, leaving Wrexham to look elsewhere if a midfielder is still on the radar.

Targets on the backs of Birmingham City and Wrexham

Birmingham appear to have own this race, adding Leonard to their frankly astonishing recruitment since appointing Chris Davies as their new manager.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Ryan Allsop, Alex Cochrane, Christoph Klarer, Emil Hansson, Willum Thor Willumsson and Alfie May have all signed on the dotted line this summer.

The Blues already had a strong-looking squad heading into League One but have spent handsomely this summer and may yet end the window having spent more than most Championship clubs.

Everybody will be gunning to take the Blues down this season but that goes for Wrexham too.

Wrexham not have spent anywhere near the money Birmingham have, but celebrity owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds mean everybody wants to beat Wrexham.

Add in the shot-down rumours of a League One game between the sides being eyed for a move to the US and there will be many League One supporters desperate to see their clubs beat Birmingham and Wrexham this term.
