EFL pundit suggests Wrexham would complete a ‘big coup’ if Phil Parkinson signs 13-goal Championship attacker

Wrexham are in the mix to sign Josh Windass this summer as the attacker prepares to leave Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Wrexham have secured two signings this summer as Phil Parkinson prepares for life in the Championship.

Danny Ward and Ryan Hardie have joined Wrexham this summer, with spending limited so far.

Ward was a free transfer and Hardie cost just £700,000, so Wrexham fans may see big money splashed before the end of the window.

Hardie grabbed a goal in his first Wrexham appearance on Friday, scoring against Melbourne Victory.

Wrexham may still look for further attacking quality, though, and Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass is on the radar.

EFL pundit reacts to Wrexham’s interest in Josh Windass

Reports earlier in July suggested that Wrexham are eyeing Windass, but face competition from his former club Rangers.

Payment issues at Sheffield Wednesday mean Windass could leave Hillsborough for free this summer.

The 31-year-old is bound to be in demand from Championship clubs, having proven himself at this level over the years.

Windass hit 13 Championship goals last season and offers real versatility in the final third.

EFL pundit Don Goodman has now reacted to those rumours – and believes Windass would be a ‘big coup’ for Wrexham.

Speaking to Football League World, Goodman suggested that Windass provides the proven Championship quality Wrexham need after promotion.

Goodman praised Windass for his displays last season, and suggested that he can totally understand why Wrexham may push to bring him to the STōK Cae Ras.

“I could understand the interest from Wrexham in Josh Windass, it would be a big coup,” said Goodman. “We know that Phil Parkinson likes experienced players, but in reality how many of those experienced players are going to be playing week in, week out in the Championship next season – not too many at this stage I wouldn’t have thought.

“It would leave Wrexham with only a sort of a smattering starting eleven that has extensive Championship experience. So somebody like Josh Windass, who did really well last season in terms of scoring goals and assists – 13 goals, five assists I think it was – I can definitely understand the attraction from Wrexham’s point of view,” he added.

Wrexham eyeing Sheffield Wednesday situation

Parkinson’s focus will be on Wrexham’s pre-season tour in Australia and New Zealand.

The transfer market doesn’t sleep, though, and Wrexham will be eyeing up a number of potential signings.

Windass is on the radar, but Wrexham will also have one eye on Sheffield Wednesday’s situation for other players.

The Owls could lose key players after failing to receive wages in recent months.

Wrexham are eyeing Barry Bannan, whose Owls contract has already expired this summer, but he could yet return under new ownership.

Wrexham are even keen on Stuart Armstrong, who was released by Wednesday this summer but could be re-signed.

The Sun report that American businessman Tilman Fertitta is in talks to purchase Wednesday, which would alleviate those financial woes.

If Fertitta – or any other businessman – secures a deal for Wednesday, the likes of Windass, Bannan and Armstrong may be minded to stay in South Yorkshire.

Wrexham will monitor that situation closely, all while hoping to sign at least one of these experienced targets.
