Wrexham have kept a close eye on a Championship superstar who could be made available this summer on a free.

Following promotion to the Championship, Wrexham are looking to bolster their options in the summer transfer window.

The intent shown by Wrexham so far suggests that they are prioritising the recruitment of Championship-experienced players, with several midfielders and attackers already being linked to the side.

Whilst Wrexham haven’t quite had success on their side in the pursuit of Fulham star Tom Cairney, who now looks more likely to stay at the Premier League side, they may have found the perfect alternative, one who has notched a total of 374 Championship appearances in his career.

Wrexham target Championship legend and Sheffield Wednesday star Barry Bannan

The next name to be linked to Wrexham is Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan, with reports coming from The Sun.

Bannan could potentially be made available this summer, having yet to finalise a contract with Sheffield Wednesday, who have undergone issues this summer paying players and staff. The Scottish midfielder’s priorities would lie within staying at the South Yorkshire club, but such matters still being unresolved may turn his head.

Despite being 35 years old, Bannan still oozes class at Championship level, having bagged four goals and notched five assists last season.

One man who would approve of the signing is former Wrexham star Steven Fletcher, who once joined Sheffield Wednesday after Bannan convinced him to join the Owls, as the former Dragons striker said via The Star.

Barry Bannan would provide the key perk that Phil Parkinson desires

If Wrexham were to sign Bannan, the first thing they would benefit from is the leadership and experience he would bring to the dressing room.

Moving up to the Championship and hopefully continuing their momentum will be a difficult task for Wrexham, but with Bannan in the centre of the park, such daunting tasks would certainly be eased.

It is clear that Parkinson wants a leader who knows the Championship like the back of his hand, and Bannan is just the man for that. On top of this, the bonus comes with the fact that he has aged like a fine wine on the pitch, showing very few signs of his age while still darting after every loose ball.

As signings of experienced heads go, it couldn’t get much better for Wrexham if they signed Bannan, who would certainly transform their midfield.
