A former Premier League and England striker has just revealed whether he would play for Wrexham next season.
Wrexham are gearing up for their first League One campaign since 2005 after winning promotion.
The Reds, backed by the riches of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, are expected to be busy in the transfer window.
During their time in Wales, the Hollywood owners have thrown up surprises left right and centre. From capturing Paul Mullin from third-tier Cambridge United in 2021 to luring ex-Premier League stars Steven Fletcher and James McClean to the club, Wrexham are an attractive proposition for most players at the moment.
Wrexham’s executive director Humphrey Ker has even said he wouldn’t rule out Jamie Vardy plundering goals at the Racecourse Ground, despite just watching him fire Leicester City back to the Premier League.
Nonetheless, it shows their intent in the transfer window as former Premier League striker Saido Berahino is now open to joining the club.
When asked on X, formerly Twitter, he responded: “Why not.”
Saido Berahino’s career so far
Many will remember Saido Berahino for being the wonderkid who broke onto the scene at West Brom.
He announced himself on the Premier League stage by tearing through defences as a 20-year-old and in the 2014/15 campaign, he netted 14 goals in the top flight.
Stoke City later captured the Englishman in January 2017 for £12 million but sadly, he never lived up to the hype that his early career promised.
Berahino only scored five goals in 56 appearances for the Potters and since leaving in 2019, has played at Zulte Wargem and SC Charleroi in Belgium before returning to England with Sheffield Wednesday.
During his time with the Owls in the 2021/22 campaign, he netted a respectable eight goals in 29 appearances before leaving for Cypus and AEL Limassol, where he’s at currently.
Saido Berahino could be the perfect Paul Mullin partner
It is fair to say that Berahino’s career has fallen off in recent years, but if he can rediscover his previous goal-scoring form while showing the rest of his attributes, he’d be a solid signing for Wrexham.
Still only 30-years-old, the striker is certainly good enough to play in League One and he could form a deadly partnership with Mullin.
Although Phil Parkinson prefers to play a tall striker next to the Liverpudlian, Berahino’s pace in behind could be crucial to stretching defences and opening up space for Mullin.
It’s also an opportunity for the fleet-footed forward to resurrect his career as he’s entering the years where he should be at the top of his game.
McElhenney and Reynolds have shown they can attract high-profile former Premier League players to the club, and the signing of Berahino would be the latest addition.
