Peterborough Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has now claimed that Wrexham made a last-minute offer for striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, but then went quiet over a potential deal.
Wrexham had a busy transfer deadline day, bringing in Arthur Okonkwo and George Evans, and also failed to complete a deal for Harrogate striker Luke Armstrong.
However, they could have had a third addition in Clarke-Harris if they had followed up their initial interest in the forward.
Speaking on The Hard Truth Podcast, MacAnthony revealed that Wrexham made an offer for the striker, but then mysteriously pulled out of the deal.
“Wrexham contacted me and said they were going to make a bid which was interesting,” he stated.
“It might have seemed a strange move for the player, but if they got him it would probably mean back-to-back promotions for them so I could see the logic.
“Apparently Hollywood had approved the move, but then they just went quiet. They never came back to me which was a surprise, especially when I saw who they eventually tried to sign.”
Should Wrexham have signed Clarke-Harris?
The 29-year-old scored 26 times in League One last season, and could have been an ideal solution upfront, as Phil Parkinson was keen on adding more goals to his side in the absence of Paul Mullin.
It seems that Wrexham chose to pursue Armstrong instead, but the deal fell through at the last second, and the club ended the window without a striker.

Clarke-Harris may have been a better option considering his prolific record at a higher level, and he could have had the quality to fire Wrexham to promotion. That Wrexham chose to not pursue him, is therefore surprising, and the club are now in a weaker position.
Mullin will hopefully return in the coming weeks to give Wrexham a boost upfront after a difficult start to the season.
