Wrexham battling two of Phil Parkinson’s former clubs in race for ‘maverick’ attacker

Wrexham are involved a fight to get out of League Two and may not have firm transfer plans in mind until the promotion fight is known.

Wrexham seemed to be in a perfect position after last Friday’s 2-0 home win over Mansfield Town.

However, Tuesday’s trip to Doncaster Rovers ended in a 1-0 defeat and Wrexham still have work to do.

Four wins from the last five games will send Wrexham up automatically, but a few slip-ups from Milton Keynes Dons would be welcomed.

Phil Parkinson and co would no doubt love to have promotion wrapped up as quickly as possible.

For now, Wrexham are in limbo; some players who would be in the plans – either current players or those who could come in – in League Two may not be in the plans if promotion is secured.

Wrexham will have targets in mind for both scenarios but it may be difficult to really start work on new signings until the promotion fate is known.

Wrexham linked with Northern Ireland talent

Still, Wrexham are being linked with one potential signing ahead of the summer window.

TEAMtalk claim that Wrexham are interested in snapping up Loughgall talent Benji Magee this summer.

It’s stated that Wrexham have ‘made checks’ on Magee this season, which would make sense after similar rumours surrounding another talent in Northern Ireland.

Wrexham have also looked at signing Cliftonville talent Ronan Hale with Magee seemingly on the radar too.

The report adds that two of Parkinson’s former clubs – Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic – are also interested in signing Magee.

Oxford United and Hibernian are also thought to be keen on Magee as Wrexham face a battle with English and Scottish clubs.

Who is Wrexham target Benji Magee?

Magee has been on the books with a number of Northern Irish clubs.

The striker – who can also play out wide – has been with Ards, Crusaders, PSNI and Lisburn before settling down with Loughgall in 2022.

Magee has been exceptional this season, smashing 16 goals in 31 league games whilst also adding one assist.

The 21-year-old has now become a Northern Ireland Under-21 international and senior caps surely aren’t too far away.

Loughgall boss Dean Smith has hailed Magee as a ‘maverick’ and has also highlighted his pace and direct running ability in the final third.

Magee could be a versatile attacking talent for Wrexham to nurture but much will depend on whether Wrexham head into League One this summer.
