Wrexham have transfer work to do as Michael Smith update emerges

Wrexham continue to chase a new striker signing but Phil Parkinson has some work to do on a deal for Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Smith.

This has been a decent start to the season for Wrexham.

The season opener against Wycombe Wanderers was a euphoric evening as Wrexham not only returned to League One, but secured a 3-2 victory.

The 4-2 defeat at Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup wasn’t a huge setback but Wrexham certainly wanted to tighten up against Bolton Wanderers.

After six goals conceded in two games, Wrexham produced a strong defensive display at Bolton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.

A 0-0 draw wasn’t the most enthralling encounter of all time but with Arthur Okonkwo impressing between the sticks, Wrexham will be pleased with a clean sheet.

Michael Smith to Wrexham latest

Wrexham lacked a little bit of attacking firepower against Bolton, even with Steven Fletcher coming off the bench in the second half.

Sam Dalby was an unused substitute and Paul Mullin remains on the sidelines, so Wrexham are in need of a striking boost.

One target is Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith.

Reports earlier in August highlighted that Wrexham have held talks to sign Smith as Phil Parkinson looks to add to his strike force.

Smith came off the bench to score against Plymouth Argyle on the opening weekend of the Championship season but he could still leave the Owls.

The Sheffield Star now add that Wrexham are ‘way off an agreement’ with Wednesday with little progress being made towards a deal.

Smith was introduced at half-time on Sunday as Wednesday were beaten by Sunderland, so he still seems to be in Danny Rohl’s plans at Hillsborough.

Time is running out as the summer transfer deadline looms and Wrexham clearly have work to do in order to get a deal done.

Another experienced striker eyed

Rumours earlier in the window suggested that Wrexham were actually looking to sign a younger forward.

Kieran Bowie, Bailey Cadamarteri and Will Lankshear have all been targeted but they have been a mixed bag.

Bowie joined Hibernian, Cadamarteri has yet to move on and Tottenham plan to keep Lankshear as things stand.

Wrexham are now looking at another experienced striker in Smith and fans may question if that is really what Parkinson needs.

Steven Fletcher is 37, Ollie Palmer is 32 and both Paul Mullin and Jack Marriott are 29, so Wrexham already have plenty of experienced forwards.

Adding Smith, who turns 33 in October and represents a physical threat in the final third, would seem to be more of the same for Wrexham.

Perhaps Smith is just one option on the Wrexham radar but having added younger prospects such as Lewis Brunt and Sebastian Revan, we would prefer Wrexham to go down that route again – even if only on loan for the season.
