Wrexham now interested in signing Copa America defender from Championship club

Wrexham now have two transfers over the line this summer and are looking to add more new faces to Phil Parkinson’s squad at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham made a first signing of the summer in June as goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo completed a permanent move.

The giant stopper dazzled on loan from Arsenal last season and decided to stick around as his Gunners contract came to an end.

That was a great start but Wrexham needed more – and we are starting to see business pick up.

Wrexham have completed the signing of Leicester City defender Lewis Brunt, who was Mansfield Town’s top summer target.

More and more rumours are emerging though and it looks like Wrexham are looking into a double raid on Championship side Millwall.

Wrexham chase Wes Harding deal

We joked earlier this week that Phil Parkinson must have enjoyed watching Millwall last season.

Lions striker Tom Bradshaw and Hull City wide man Ryan Longman – who spent last season on loan at Millwall – are both thought to be wanted by Wrexham.

Another Millwall name is now on the radar though as London News Online’s Richard Cawley reports that Wrexham are keen to land Wes Harding.

The defender wants first-team football but Millwall are reluctant to let him leave until they can make some signings.

That may force Wrexham to look elsewhere but The Mirror’s Darren Witcoop suggests that Wrexham want both Harding and Bradshaw to make the move from South London.

Witcoop believes that both players are available this summer, so it may just be case of timing in terms of Millwall’s incoming business.

Who is Wrexham target Harding?

Harding hails from Leicester and started his career in the Aston Villa ranks before joining their bitter rivals Birmingham City as a teenager.

The defender spent time on loan at Alfreton Town before going on to make 59 first-team appearances for the Blues.

Harding left Birmingham for Rotherham United in 2020 and became a mainstay of the side, racking up 140 appearances in all competitions.

Millwall pounced to sign Harding last summer and played 24 Championship games, but hasn’t featured since February – hence his desire to leave and play regularly elsewhere.

Harding was born in England but qualified to play for Jamaica and switched his international allegiance to The Reggae Boyz in 2021.

The 27-year-old has been involved at Copa America this summer and started in a 3-0 defeat to Venezuela earlier this week as Jamaica crashed out of the tournament.

A centre back who can also operate at right back or right wing back, Harding has real versatility and plenty of experience in League One.

Wrexham understandably want business done early, but Harding – hailed as a ‘leader’ by Adam Barrett – may be worth waiting for this summer.
