Wrexham clashed with Bolton Wanderers in a League One fixture on Saturday afternoon.

Phil Parkinson made a number of changes to the matchday squad that was knocked out of the EFL Trophy by Peterborough United in midweek.

Paull Mullin was left out by the Wrexham boss, seeing Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez return as the preferred striking duo with Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher options off the bench.

None of the quartet were able to muster up a goal on Saturday, however, with the Red Dragons forced to settle for a 0-0 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

Wrexham fans were impressed by Ryan Longman on Saturday, and Ollie Rathone also shone during his time on the pitch.

In the end, it was a rather uneventful 90 minutes from both teams but supporters in the ground certainly had some fun.

Wrexham fans correct Bolton supporters after bizarre chant

These two sides met in the EFL Trophy last month and after losing that clash 1-0, Bolton fans were furious with the referee on the day.

The Wanderers faithful who attended the meeting at the Racecourse Ground on March 1st were also very loud and had a rather embarrassing chant.

As anyone who watched the game will have heard and as was documented by the Racecourse Ramble on X/Twitter, Bolton fans who made the trip decided to make up a chant about Wrexham never playing in Europe.

It was a bizarre chant given the fact the Red Dragons have played in Europe many times throughout their storied history. They could be heard saying: “Have you ever been to Europe? Have you —-“

Wrexham fans in attendance quickly reminded the opposition supporters of their mistake, chanting in response: “Have you ever beaten Porto? Have you —-“.

Wrexham history in European football

Wrexham got their first taste of European football back in the 1972/73 season, competing in the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

They competed in that competition on seven more occasions, last doing so in the 1995/96 campaign.

Their longest run in the European Cup Winners’ Cup came in 1975/76 when they made it all the way to the quarter-final before being knocked out by R.S.C. Anderlecht

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney wanted Wrexham back in Europe and were looking to achieve this by entering their club into the Welsh League Cup, the winner of which earns a spot in the Europa Conference League.

But that plan has since been halted by the FA, and it’s not known at this stage if the Red Dragons will try again to enter the competition.
