Wrexham are back in action on Wednesday night as Phil Parkinson once again turns his attention back towards the EFL Trophy.

Wrexham hit back in League One on Sunday afternoon, beating Mansfield Town 2-1 away from home.

This was a crucial victory with Wrexham desperate to hit back after defeat to Leyton Orient at the STōK Cae Ras last week.

Phil Parkinson must now put the promotion charge to one side though with Wrexham seeking progression in the EFL Trophy.

The semi-final stage is now upon us and Birmingham City have already booked a spot in the final.

Darren Ferguson on Wrexham clash

Wrexham have been superb throughout this EFL Trophy campaign but must still get the job done on Wednesday night.

Peterborough arrive having endured a testing League One season with the Posh sitting 20th in the League One table.

Still just two points clear of the drop zone after beating Huddersfield Town over the weekend, Darren Ferguson may well that the league campaign is more important right now.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, Ferguson admitted that he is more bothered about this weekend’s game against Shrewsbury Town.

That game will be crucial to Peterborough’s survival hopes and whilst Ferguson isn’t ‘sacrificing’ the Wrexham clash, he has made his priority clear.

Ferguson accepts that a game at Wembley would be quite the occasion though and wants to try and stop a ‘Hollywood final’, claiming that everybody wants Peterborough to lose in order to set up Wrexham v Birmingham.

“I wouldn’t say I’m sacrificing the Wrexham game,” said Ferguson. “But there is no doubt the game with Shrewsbury is a far more important one for the club. Some players cannot play at Wrexham which makes things a bit easier and I certainly won’t be taking any chances with the players returning from injury.

“But playing at Wembley is a big carrot for the club and getting back there would give us all a lift. You can’t hide that fact. I will just tell the players who I do pick to go out there and enjoy the occasion.

“It will be a decent crowd and the atmosphere will be good so it’s a game we will look forward to. Everyone wants a ‘Hollywood’ final so it’s up to us to try and stop it happening!” he added.

Wrexham fans will welcome Darren Ferguson

This game will see Ferguson make another return to Wrexham.

A Wrexham fan favourite from his playing days, Ferguson saw his Posh side beaten at the STōK Cae Ras back in January.

Ferguson was part of Wrexham’s last League One lineup before the club return to the third tier last year.

Ferguson will no doubt receive a warm welcome from Wrexham fans who loved watching him play in the famous red shirt.

Once the whistle blows though, there will be no niceties from Wrexham fans with a place at Wembley on the line.

Ferguson has previously praised Wrexham as a ‘powerful team’ who just have a habit of finding late goals.

The Scot will be preparing his side for another fierce battle with Wrexham ultimately looking to send the former midfielder packing on Wednesday night.
