Wrexham produced another late show at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday afternoon, beating Peterborough United 1-0.

Wrexham started 2025 with a defeat, losing 2-1 away at Barnsley on New Year’s Day.

Fans were hopeful of an immediate response though as Wrexham returned to host Peterborough United at the STōK Cae Ras.

Phil Parkinson has a sensational home record at Wrexham and we have seen that on show in this festive period.

Wrexham found late goals to beat Blackpool and Wigan Athletic after Christmas and that spirit was on show against Peterborough too.

Steven Fletcher has been the hero of late and he was at it again on Saturday, burying a late winner to secure another home victory.

Darren Ferguson delivers Wrexham verdict

Wrexham made it three home wins in a row with Saturday’s result and continue the push towards promotion.

Fletcher came off the bench to score the winner against Blackpool before repeating the trick against Wigan Athletic – and he did it again on Saturday.

The Scot is really stepping up and taking his chance off the bench, supplying crucial games for the Wrexham cause.

Saturday’s result will have been a bitter pill for Darren Ferguson to swallow though as he made his return to Wrexham.

Ferguson was a Wrexham fan favourite in his playing days, racking up more than 300 league appearances for the club as a midfielder.

Ferguson predicted a real fight with Wrexham this weekend and that is certainly how it played out as Parkinson just about sneaked home a late win thanks to Fletcher’s goal.

The Scot has now offered his reaction to the game, telling BBC Sport that he was ‘bitterly disappointed’ to lose the game.

Ferguson suggested that Wrexham are a ‘powerful team’ but was proud of how his side competed at the STōK Cae Ras.

Ferguson added that he has seen Wrexham’s late shows ‘many times’ and believes that Parkinson’s side are ‘very good’ at securing late goals.

“We’re bitterly disappointed we’ve lost the game. I didn’t think there was anything in it to be honest, we went toe to toe with them,” said Ferguson.

“We competed really well against them because they’re a powerful team. We had the best chance of the first half – I don’t know how it’s not gone in, it’s gone off his legs and gone in the keeper’s hands.

“But unfortunately I’ve seen it many times here – Wrexham found a way of getting a late goal. They’re very good at it,” he added.

Late goals becoming a key theme for Wrexham

Many League One fans will suggest that Wrexham simply haven’t been all that impressive of late.

The wins over Blackpool, Wigan and Peterborough have all been by just one goal with the winners coming late on.

Fletcher’s winning goals in those three home wins have come in the following minutes; 88, 91, 87.

Some may call that fortunate but Wrexham will view it as a sign of the winning mentality in Parkinson’s squad with Ollie Rathbone drawing comparisons to Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.

To keep winning games so late on is a great trait; we saw it so many times from Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen last season.

They ended up being incredibly successful and Wrexham will be hopeful of these late goals inspiring another incredible season under Parkinson.
