Another crucial game awaits Wrexham this weekend, with automatic promotion within touching distance for the Welsh outfit.
Following a run of four wins in their last five League One games, Phil Parkinson‘s men now hold a three point lead over third-place Wycombe Wanderers heading into the final weeks of the 2024/25 season. However, as Wycombe’s win in midweek showed, any slip-up in the last five games is likely to be capitalised upon by Mike Dodds’ men.
Wrexham will be hoping to maintain their recent fine form when they travel to the Brick Community Stadium to face off against Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.
Parkinson’s men ran out dramatic winners that last time the two faced off in League One, with a 91st minute goal from Steven Fletcher proving to be the difference between the two sides.
Ahead of this weekend’s game, here’s how the expert team at The Wrexham Insider think the second meeting of the season between Wrexham and Wigan will pan out.
Experts predict narrow Wrexham win over Wigan Athletic
Jakob Barnes – Wigan 1-3 Wrexham
It’s a bit of an unpredictable one this, with Wigan Athletic in a position where they desperately need a win to secure their status in the division, but I do fancy Wrexham to simply have too much quality and momentum, and they’ll get another three points on the road here.
I’ll go Wrexham to win 3-1, and I expect a similar story to the Burton game, with Steven Fletcher coming off the bench again to make the difference. His physical presence will be essential to getting the better of a dogged, cagey Wigan side on the day.

George Light – Wigan 0-1 Wrexham
Both sides have been good defensively this season and with Wigan still wanting some points to ensure safety they may set their stall out for a point.
Wrexham need the three points to avoid giving Wycombe any more encouragement in the promotion race and Sam Smith will be the difference yet again by taking one of the few chances that will fall his way.
Jack Gallagher – Wigan 0-1 Wrexham
Despite being down in 18th in League One, Wigan’s defensive record this season is the best of any team outside of the play-off positions. With that in mind, expect this game to be a bit of a dog-fight for 90 minutes in which Wrexham see a lot of the ball deep in Wigan’s half.
It may take a while – there’s potential for another 90th minute winner – but Parkinson’s side will likely have a enough to finally break Wigan down late in the game, with Jay Rodriguez perhaps continuing his improved form to do so.
Olly Dawes – Wigan 1-2 Wrexham
Wrexham’s away form has been strong since losing at Shrewsbury Town in January, and I’m backing another victory on the road at Wigan Athletic.
The Latics haven’t really found the famed ‘new manager bounce’ since Ryan Lowe’s appointment in March, failing to win since his arrival.

Three points and just three goals from five games with Lowe at the helm leaves Wigan still in some relegation danger, with Wrexham looking to pile the pressure on this weekend.
This is likely to be a tight game and may only be decided by one goal, but Wrexham have the quality to bag all three points with Sam Smith finding the net once again.
Who Wycombe are playing at the weekend
Following their win over Huddersfield Town in their game in-hand on Tuesday evening, Wycombe fans are confident that the race for the final automatic promotion place isn’t quite done yet.
They’ll hope to continue to put pressure on Wrexham with a win over Stevenage at 12:30 on Saturday April 12.
Stevenage have been somewhat of a bogey team for Wrexham during the 2024/25 season, having lost to Alex Revell’s side twice – including a dramatic 3-2 defeat at the end of January.
Wycombe, on the other hand, have had much less trouble against Stevenage, thumping them 3-0 in their first meeting over the campaign.
