Wrexham’s promotion push certainly isn’t done yet, after Wycombe Wanderers produced a huge performance on the road to beat Huddersfield Town.

The end of the League One season is now in sight, and Wrexham are going for another promotion.

Not content with two promotions in a row, Wrexham want a third – and are in a great position to do so.

Wrexham beat Burton Albion 3-0 on Saturday to open up a six-point lead over Wycombe Wanderers in the race for second place.

Wycombe lost at Reading to put the race in Wrexham’s hands with just a handful of games to play.

The job isn’t done yet, though, and Wycombe’s game in hand came with a trip to Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

Wycombe Wanderers win to keep pressure on Wrexham

Wycombe were only able to take a point against Shrewsbury Town and then lost at Reading.

Tuesday’s trip to Huddersfield became a must-win game for Wycombe; anything less than three points would leave Wrexham so close to the Championship.

Wycombe had to withstand pressure from the Terriers but got the job done with a 1-0 victory in West Yorkshire.

Daniel Udoh scored the only goal of the game, firing Wycombe to victory on the road.

The stats paint quite the picture; Wycombe had just 35% of possession and completed 273 passes compared to Huddersfield’s 488.

Wycombe still managed more shots and more shots on target, though, making the most of their time in possession.

The victory leaves Wycombe three points behind Wrexham, keeping the pressure on in the promotion race.

Wrexham face five-game shootout for promotion

Wycombe boss Mike Dodds cursed a ‘harsh week’ for his side, but the Chairboys have given their promotion hopes a major boost.

That game in hand has been lingering for a while now, but it’s now out of the way – and Wycombe won.

Both Wrexham and Wycombe now have just five games to play, presenting a straight five-game shootout for second place.

Wrexham have that three-point advantage and should have real confidence of hanging on to second place.

Wrexham head to Wigan Athletic this weekend before hosting Bristol Rovers.

The season ends with trips to Blackpool and Lincoln City either side of a huge home clash against Charlton Athletic.

Wycombe host Stevenage this weekend, which any Wrexham fan can say is not an easy game by any stretch of the imagination.

Dodds then travels to Bolton Wanderers before hosting Charlton, visiting Leyton Orient and welcoming Stockport County to Adams Park to see out the season.

That is a tough run, with four of those sides sitting in the top nine of the League One table.

Wrexham still have the advantage, but Tuesday’s result means this promotion race may well go right down to the wire.
