Wrexham are back up to second in the League One table after beating Stockport County 1-0 at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday afternoon.

Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers last weekend as Phil Parkinson temporarily took his side up to second in the League One table.

That didn’t last long though as Wycombe beat Rotherham United in midweek to go back above Wrexham in the race for promotion.

Wycombe’s scheduled clash with Huddersfield Town was postponed due to international call-ups though, handing Wrexham a chance to get back in front against Stockport County.

Jay Rodriguez scored the only goal to hand Wrexham the 1-0 win, recovering quickly to score on the rebound after Corey Addai’s penalty save.

Paul Merson praised Rodriguez for his reaction as Wrexham picked up yet another victory thanks to his quick thinking.

Jay Rodriguez reacts after Wrexham winner

Rodriguez joined Wrexham in January but the veteran forward has been struggling in front of goal.

Wrexham fans still aren’t convinced by Rodriguez but the former Burnley man is finally off the mark in a Wrexham shirt.

Rodriguez will no doubt feel as if a weight has been lifted after that goal – especially as it ended up being the winner.

Rodriguez has now taken to Instagram to celebrate, posting ‘big three points, buzzing to get my first goal in red’.

The striker showcased photos of himself celebrating his goal and applauding Wrexham fans after a big home victory.

Wrexham now have a week until the next game, travelling to take on Exeter City away from home next weekend.

The hope is that this goal will give Rodriguez major confidence and potentially see him hit the goal trail in the promotion run-in.

Players react to Jay Rodriguez message

Wrexham players responded to Rodriguez with the squad clearly loving his winning goal.

Max Cleworth, Ryan Barnett, George Evans, George Dobson, Arthur Okonkwo, Andy Cannon and See Revan all sent their support with emojis in response to Rodriguez.

Dan Scarr said ‘love it you’ whilst Steven Fletcher added ‘love it Jay Rod’.

Out-of-favour Ollie Palmer showed no ill-feeling towards the striker who has bumped him down the pecking order, stating ‘Yeee yeee some new sneakers incoming’.

Former Burnley teammate Nathan Redmond said ‘A fine wine, nothing new’ as he admired Rodriguez’s work from afar.
