Sam Smith likened to ex-Arsenal goal machine after stunning Wrexham winner versus Wycombe Wanderers

Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon with Sam Smith scoring the only goals at Adams Park.

Wrexham simply had to step up against Wycombe Wanderers this weekend.

Phil Parkinson watched on as Wrexham were beaten by Reading in midweek, losing 2-0 in Berkshire.

That was far from ideal preparation for facing Wycombe in this second versus third clash at the top of League One.

Wrexham needed to step up and secured all three points at Adams Park with January signing Sam Smith firing home a brilliant volley.

Parkinson has praised Smith for his goal whilst Rob McElhenney has offered a heartfelt message after one Wrexham fan suffered a medical emergency.

Sam Smith reacts to Wrexham victory

Wrexham have now moved above Wycombe and into second place in the League One table.

That understandably feels huge right now, but Wycombe could go level again with a win over Rotherham United in midweek.

Wrexham just had to respond after that poor showing at Reading and Parkinson’s promotion hopes have received a major boost.

Arthur Okonkwo has been praised by James McClean for his brilliant goalkeeping but most of the adulation is heading the way of Sam Smith.

Smith is Wrexham’s record signing following his January move from Reading and big things are expected.

Three goals in nine League One games for Wrexham is not a bad record at all and his superb volley summed up the quality in his locker.

Smith has taken to Instagram to celebrate but also send a message to the fan who suffered a medical emergency.

“Huge 3 points. Thoughts and prayers are with the Wrexham fan who had a health incident! Thankyou for the support!” said Smith.

Sam Smith praised for Wrexham winner

Smith received praise in the replies with Wrexham striker Modou Faal simply stating ‘my hero’.

James McClean and Sebastian Revan both showed their support after Smith’s winning goal with Wrexham players clearly impressed.

Reading players also offered comments after seeing Smith leave the club for Wrexham in January.

Charlie Savage applauded Smith whilst Harvey Knibbs – who scored against Wrexham on Tuesday night – simply said ‘RVP’.

That is a clear comparison towards former Arsenal hero Robin van Persie, whose left-footed volleys became the stuff of legend.

Smith’s goal certainly looked like a Van Persie strike and Wrexham were the beneficiaries on Saturday afternoon.
