Phil Parkinson told the Wrexham squad to go out and secure the win for the Wrexham fans with Smith admitting that it was ‘special’ to score.
Smith added that the emergency really put everything into perspective for him whilst praying for everybody’s well-being.
“When we went back inside, we didn’t know what was going on and we heard and had seen the fans all reacting and we knew it was serious,” said Smith.
“The gaffer basically said ‘let’s go back out there and let’s play for the fans and get the three points’, so to get the goal was a special and feeling and yeah, just praying that everyone is okay.
“We’re here to watch and play football and everyone loves it, and when someone goes down like that, it puts things into perspective so I think you could see the emotion in the celebration,” he added.
Wrexham and Wycombe may be vying for promotion, but some things are bigger than football – and seeing this union between the two clubs after such a stressful matter is a reminder of how football can bring people together.
