Wrexham are back in the automatic promotion places in the League One table after beating Exeter City 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Wrexham will have been delighted to have a home game after the away defeat at Stockport County.

Away results have been an issue for Wrexham and losing at Edgeley Park felt like a major disappointment.

Wrexham were back at home though and took full advantage with a convincing 3-0 victory over Exeter City at the STōK Cae Ras.

Max Cleworth opened the scoring for Wrexham before Ollie Palmer headed home number two from Ryan Barnett’s cross.

Ollie Rathbone rounded off the scoring with the third, his first league goal in a Wrexham shirt.

Ollie Palmer hails new Wrexham signing

Wrexham needed a response after that defeat to Stockport and Phil Parkinson decided to make a host of changes.

Lewis Brunt impressed in his first Wrexham start in League One whilst Elliot Lee was pushed forward to support Ollie Palmer up top.

That allowed Matty James to come into midfield, joining George Dobson and goalscorer Rathbone in the engine room.

James recently joined Wrexham on a free transfer having been released by Bristol City over the summer.

James started the season without a club but Wrexham pounced to sing him in October after George Evans’ injury blow.

Parkinson was impressed with James against Port Vale in the EFL Trophy and he certainly equipped himself well against Exeter City.

Striker Ollie Palmer has now paid tribute to James whilst speaking on Wrexham Match Day Live on Wrexham’s official YouTube channel.

Palmer feels that James is a simply ‘unbelievable’ player and praised him for controlling the game against Exeter.

“The gaffer brought Matty James in, who is an unbelievable player,” said Palmer.

“You saw today how he controlled the game,” he added.

Matty James staking a claim for longer Wrexham contract

This was just a first League One start for James as a Wrexham player but he showed his class and experience in a convincing victory.

James has only signed a contract until January, offering Wrexham short-term help in midfield.

Yet if James continues to catch the eye, Wrexham will surely consider offering him an extended deal.

Wrexham fended off Leeds United to sign James and Championship sides may have one eye on how James performs in League One between now and January.
