Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson shares verdict on Wrexham striker Jack Marriott

Wrexham picked up another big win on Saturday afternoon, beating Peterborough United 2-0 as Phil Parkinson’s wrong start to the season continues.

Saturday’s trip to the Weston Homes Stadium saw Wrexham come up against a club hero in Darren Ferguson.

Peterborough United boss Ferguson was a Wrexham favourite in his playing days, becoming a real midfield maestro long, long before Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds arrived at the club.

This new era at the STōK Cae Ras has been so exciting but club legends like Ferguson should not be forgotten.

Saturday was all about business though; no room for sentiment as Wrexham picked up another League One victory.

Jack Marriott and Max Cleworth were on the scoresheet for Wrexham, going 2-0 up by half-time before seeing the game out in style.

Darren Ferguson hails Wrexham ace

That is now three wins from in League One for Wrexham, claiming 10 points from a possible 12 in a fine start to the campaign.

This has been an incredible start to the season with Wrexham not only winning at home, but even taking points on the road at established League One clubs such as Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United.

Former Wrexham ace Ferguson was left empty-handed as a result on Saturday and it was actually an ex-Peterborough player who got the ball rolling.

Jack Marriott opened the scoring for Wrexham as his deflected strike looped into the net, sparking wild scenes in the away end.

Marriott was a goalscoring hero at Peterborough and played 15 times under Ferguson, scoring three goals.

Ferguson was cursing his former striker on Saturday and told Peterborough Today that his side were just too slack defensively.

Ferguson suggested that Marriott is a ‘good finisher’ who will ‘punish you’ if given the chance – just as he did on Saturday.

The Scot also criticised his side for Cleworth’s header, believing the set-piece defending just wasn’t good enough on the day.

“There was no communication for the first goal and the second was a set-piece,” said Ferguson. “Jack Marriott is a good finisher and he will punish you if he gets the chance and we all have jobs at set pieces so if your job is to block then you can’t let a man run to within four yards of our goal for a free header,” he added.

Jack Marriott taking his chance

Wrexham fans will have felt a sense of dread upon hearing about Paul Mullin’s injury in pre-season.

Mullin has been Wrexham’s goalscoring hero in recent years and replacing that influence is not easy.

Ollie Palmer and Steven Fletcher offer experience and physicality in the final third but combined for just 15 League Two goals last season.

Somebody needed to step up and there were questions about Marriott after just one goal in 17 games after arriving in January.

Marriott really had to prove his worth with Mullin out injured and he has certainly done that, already scoring twice in four League One games.

Parkinson has hailed Marriott’s work rate and intelligence and Wrexham fans will surely have so much more belief in him than just a few months ago having excelled in the opening weeks of the campaign.
