Wrexham produced another fine performance on Saturday afternoon, comfortably beating Reading 3-0 at the STōK Cae Ras.

Phil Parkinson and co were looking for a second home win of the League One season having opened with a 3-2 victory over Wycombe Wanderers.

Wrexham then lost at Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup before a battling display in the 0-0 draw at Bolton Wanderers.

Parkinson will have been pleased to be back at the STōK Cae Ras and home comforts certainly worked well for Wrexham against Reading.

Ollie Palmer headed Wrexham in front from Ryan Barnett’s cross before Elliot Lee fired home number two after a goalmouth scramble.

Midfielder Andy Cannon then rifled home number three as Wrexham picked up a second home win of the season.

Phil Parkinson hails Wrexham striker

Palmer bagged the opener and hero Paul Mullin returned from injury, so it may have been easy to overlook the performance of Jack Marriott.

Marriott so nearly scored the second Wrexham goal but the ball fell kindly for Lee to smash home.

The former Derby County star scored a stunner against Wycombe but has yet to find the net again since.

Marriott’s influence should not be overlooked though as Parkinson paid tribute to the striker after Saturday’s win.

Speaking to Wrexham’s official YouTube channel, Parkinson suggested that Marriott needs to be given credit for working ‘tirelessly’ for the Wrexham side.

Parkinson doesn’t want Marriott’s effort to go unnoticed and highlighted his intelligence too, believing that he has bene offering a lot off the ball for Wrexham.

“I thought Jack worked tirelessly for the team again,” said Parkinson. “I want to make sure that Jack gets a lot of credit, because he really has put a lot of effort in, but just not just effort, but intelligence in terms of how he’s defended out of possession and the runs he’s made,” he added.

Marriott may face increased competition

Marriott arrived in January as Wrexham chased additional firepower for the promotion run-in.

The 29-year-old only scored once in 17 appearances and some were questioning whether he could make an impact moving forward.

Marriott has been given a run in the side with Mullin out of action though and he has clearly impressed Parkinson.

Still, Marriott may face increased competition with Wrexham now chasing another striking addition.

Wrexham have held talks to sign Michael Smith from Sheffield Wednesday but little progress has been made on a potential deal.

Other targets such as John McAtee and Kieran Bowie have ended up elsewhere whilst Tottenham Hotspur plan to keep Will Lankshear despite a Wrexham loan enquiry.

Wrexham will hope to bring a new forward before the transfer deadline this week and Marriott will need to keep impressing Parkinson in order to feature regularly.
