Wrexham are off the mark in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy having beaten League Two side Salford City at home on Tuesday night.

The joy of beating Shrewsbury Town 3-0 over the weekend was put to one side as Wrexham turned the focus to EFL Trophy action.

Now known as the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, Wrexham opened the campaign with a home clash against Salford City.

Phil Parkinson unsurprisingly took the chance to change up his team and give some valuable minutes to fringe first-team players.

Paul Mullin started as he continues his recovery from injury and he opened the scoring with a left-footed strike.

Conor McAleny brought Salford level before Wrexham found a winner; Will Boyle appeared to force the ball over the line but Josh Austerfield has been credited with an own goal.

Phil Parkinson Wrexham’s Sebastian Revan

Wrexham fielded something of a disjointed midfield as Parkinson looked to give minutes to as many players as possible.

James Jones was the only recognised midfielder in the Wrexham engine room against Salford with wide men Anthony Forde and Sebastian Revan alongside him.

Unsurprisingly, this wasn’t the most fluid Wrexham performance of all time and Parkinson will just be happy to pick up a win with an unfamiliar side.

Summer signing Revan created the opening goal, winning possession back with a superb tackle before driving forward.

Revan then picked out Mullin to score with his fine work in midfield rewarded with the Wrexham opener before also setting up the winner from a corner.

Boss Parkinson has now moved to praise Revan whilst speaking to Wrexham’s official YouTube channel.

Parkinson hailed Revan for his versatility in the Wrexham side, believing that he served the team well before an ‘excellent’ display upon returning to wing back.

“Boyley, again, has popped up and Seb, a fantastic delivery,” said Parkinson.

“Just a special mention to Seb, because I asked him to play in midfield tonight. He’s played in quite a few different positions last year at Rotherham, on the right, on the left, wing back, centre back, but never in midfield.

“I thought he took the information on board really well, then when we switched him to wing back, he was excellent,” he added.

Revan versatility so important to Wrexham

We expected to see a little more of Revan in league action by this point.

The left wing back was so impressive in pre-season and was hailed as outstanding by Parkinson despite being left on the bench against Wycombe Wanderers on the opening day.

Revan started at right wing back at Bolton Wanderers and then featured in midfield against Salford on Tuesday night.

Revan is showing incredible versatility and Parkinson also highlighted his ability to play as a left-sided centre back if needed.

The former Aston Villa talent will want a run at left wing back down the line, but for now, he is making an impact wherever Parkinson asks him to play.

That is all you can ask of a squad player at this stage but Revan will surely make an impact in his preferred position sooner rather than later.
