Wrexham managed to pull off an incredible late win against Wigan at the weekend, prompting Phil Parkinson to compare his side to Manchester United.

Despite being second-best for much of the game on Sunday, Wrexham found a way to secure all three points in the dying moments.

The win takes Phil Parkinson’s side back into the automatic promotion spots in League One, leapfrogging Wycombe Wanderers.

Parkinson praised Steven Fletcher for his involvement in the win, with the big striker bagging the winning goal after coming on as a substitute.

But, the Wrexham manager has now showered his whole team in praise, even though he knows they could have played better on the day.

Phil Parkinson loved Wrexham’s late winner vs Wigan

Speaking to The Leader after the match, Parkinson admitted his team didn’t get everything right on the day, but praised his side’s ability to keep going right until the final whistle.

He said: “Were we at our best? Probably not, we weren’t. They pressed us and hurried us out of possession at times and our structure without the ball, the detail of it wasn’t quite where it needed it be at times.

“But in terms of sticking to the job and showing character and strength and personality, I thought all that was high. It’s difficult to keep producing performances.”

Parkinson was clearly delighted with Steven Fletcher’s late winner, too, and drew comparisons between his Wrexham squad and how Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United team always seemed to pull something out of the bag at the end of games.

Parkinson added: “It’s sometimes difficult and you look at the other results around the country – Birmingham at home, Huddersfield at home – have failed to go back-to-back wins at home so it’s an amazing win for us against a good team. But the mentality of the group is so strong and it showed again.

“I was watching the Sir Alex [Ferguson] documentary yesterday and Manchester United go right to the wire and we’ve got that mentality here. We go to the end and we always believe we can get a goal and Fletch has produced a real quality strike for us to win the game.”

Wrexham’s late goals are crucial to success and could be key to promotion

It is truly incredible how often Wrexham are able to find the back of the net late in games, and that kind of resilience and desire to keep fighting until the end is not only exciting for fans, it could be key to the Red Dragons gaining promotion this season.

They don’t know when they’re beat, and that level of motivation and never-say-die attitude can be the difference between a good team and a great team.

There are concerns for Parkinson to address at Wrexham, of course, like the need for a new striker and finding more creativity in the middle of the park, but it does seem Wrexham have what it takes to go all the way this season.

They say you should never leave the Racecourse Ground early, and that was proven once again on Sunday. Long may it continue!
