Phil Parkinson must now axe underperforming Wrexham star for ‘exceptional’ player after Stevenage

Wrexham faced off with Stevenage at Broadhall Way in a League One fixture on Tuesday evening.

The Red Dragons suffered a disappointing result in their previous League One clash over the weekend.

With Birmingham City breathing down their necks at the top of the table, Phil Parkinson and co. really needed a win at Brisbane Road.

However, Wrexham drew 0-0 with Leyton Orient, slipping down to second in the division as a result.

Another tricky test away from the Racecourse Ground awaited them on Tuesday, taking on Stevenage at Broadhall Way.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace praised Wrexham and their owners – Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds – ahead of kick-off.

There were also doubts the match would even go ahead, with the dismal weather across the UK leading to a late pitch inspection at Stevenage.

The game was eventually given the green light, however, and when all was said and done, Wrexham fell to defeat once more.

Thomas O’Connor struggled for Wrexham vs Stevenage

It was another worrying away performance from Parkinson’s side, who continue to underperform nearly every time they are away from the Racecourse.

Stevenage took the lead after just 10 minutes when Louis Thompson scored a thunderous effort.

From there, Wrexham looked sluggish and struggled to really get going barring a few positive spells.

One player who was particularly poor on Tuesday evening was centre-back, Thomas O’Connor.

The defender underperformed against Leyton Orient last time out and was subpar against Stevenage before being hooked after just 66 minutes.

Sofascore gave the stopper a team-low 6.2 match rating and his stats coming out of the game were not great.

O’Connor made no tackles, interceptions or clearances, managing just one block across his time on the pitch.

He also won just two of his six duels and connected with just three of his 15 attempted longballs.

Phil Parkinson must drop Thomas O’Connor for Lewis Brunt

With Max Cleworth out injured, Wrexham’s options at the back are now somewhat light.

Summer signing Dan Scarr made his first league start for the club on Tuesday and was fairly solid.

However, Parkinson should now look to hand another summer addition his first start in the league next time out.

Lewis Brunt joined Wrexham from Leicester City during the 2024 summer transfer window.

Brunt has been dubbed ‘exceptional’ previously but has found it tough breaking into the starting line-up this season.

But with O’Connor struggling for the second game in a row, Parkinson should now look to hand Brunt a chance.
