Wrexham have advanced into the third round of the Carabao Cup after coming from behind to beat Preston North End on Tuesday night.

Phil Parkinson will be delighted with another Wrexham comeback in the Carabao Cup.

Wrexham came from 3-1 down to force penalties against Hull City in the first round of the competition, with Ollie Palmer the hero on that night.

Palmer wasn’t involved against Preston North End on Tuesday night, but Wrexham still pulled off another fightback to progress into the third round.

Wrexham were 2-1 down at the break, but Harry Ashfield scored a deflected equaliser before Kieffer Moore won it late on.

Phil Parkinson on Callum Doyle’s Wrexham debut

Wrexham are in the hat for round three and would love to see one of the top Premier League clubs visit the STōK Cae Ras.

Parkinson was able to rotate his squad ahead of Wrexham’s trip to Millwall this weekend, and that meant a chance for Callum Doyle.

Wrexham signed Doyle from Manchester City last week, securing the defender in a seven-figure move.

Doyle slotted in on the left side of Wrexham’s back three and performed well in Wrexham’s 3-2 victory.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the final whistle at Deepdale, Parkinson praised Doyle’s debut performance as ‘terrific’.

Parkinson noted that competition for places is key for Wrexham, with Doyle’s arrival helping bring the squad closer to where Parkinson wants to be moving forward.

“Football never changes, competition for places is key,” said Parkinson. “Players, when they get the chance, have got to step up to the plate and let their football do the talking.

“It’s a good night’s work for us, a lot of lads came in, we made 11 changes. I think you’ve also got to look at the players who weren’t here tonight. [Liberato] Cacace’s coming back, George Thomason, Josh Windass. Nathan Broadhead wasn’t even in the squad.

“So the squad is getting to where we want it to be, and a special mention to Callum Doyle as well – I thought he was terrific for us,” he added.

Callum Doyle knocking on the door for a start at Millwall

Michael Williamson played a key role in signing Doyle, visiting Manchester City to thrash out a deal for the defender.

It’s no surprise to see the 21-year-old make a swift impact for Wrexham, given that he has already spent three seasons on loan in the Championship.

Doyle’s history with Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich City means he won’t be surprised by anything in the Championship.

Now with minutes in the tank as a Wrexham player, Doyle will hope to land a first start against Millwall this weekend.

The trip to The Den will be a battle, but Doyle will hope to have done enough to take Lewis Brunt’s place in the Wrexham back three this weekend.
