Wrexham are back in action on Tuesday night, travelling to take on Preston North End in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Championship action takes a back seat on Tuesday night, which may not be the worst thing in the world for Wrexham.

Wrexham drew 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday over the weekend, squandering a 2-0 lead to only take a point.

Phil Parkinson won’t be too worried just yet, but Wrexham have taken just one point from the first three games.

The Carabao Cup could be a catalyst for improved league form, though, and Wrexham head to face Preston North End at Deepdale.

Wrexham beat Hull City on penalties in round one, completing a remarkable fightback late in the day to force spot kicks.

Wrexham lineup v Preston North End

Parkinson was always going to make changes for this one as he rotates his squad.

Arthur Okonkwo comes back into the starting XI tonight, replacing Danny Ward in goal.

New signing Callum Doyle starts on the left side of Wrexham’s back three, joining Eoghan O’Connell and Dan Scarr at the back.

Ryan Barnett and Jacob Mendy are the wing-backs for Wrexham tonight, flanking a midfield three of George Evans, Elliot Lee and Harry Ashfield.

Sam Smith comes into the attack, joining summer signing Ryan Hardie up top for Wrexham.

Nathan Broadhead has a calf problem and is not even on the bench, though Kieffer Moore is fit to play as a substitute.

Callum Burton, Aaron James, Max Cleworth, Lewis Brunt, James McClean, Ryan Longman, George Dobson and Lewis O’Brien make up the rest of the Wrexham bench.

Phil Parkinson makes brutal Ollie Palmer decision

Ollie Palmer was Wrexham’s hero in the first round, scoring two late goals against Hull City to force a penalty shootout.

Some wondered whether Palmer would be given a start in round two, but he is not even on the bench.

Parkinson’s decision must be painful for Palmer, who did all he could to impress against Hull but finds himself on the sidelines once again.

Parkinson has made Palmer available ahead of the summer transfer deadline and feels that the giant striker needs to move on for first-team action.

Palmer wants to stay at Wrexham, but not even making the bench in the Carabao Cup after scoring twice in round one suggests that there is no way back.

Perhaps Parkinson wants to avoid the risk of Palmer picking up an injury in the coming days, with the transfer deadline fast approaching.

This is a real shame, but if Palmer’s two-goal salvo against Hull proves to be his final appearance in a Wrexham shirt, then he will have gone out on a high.
