Wrexham were aiming to continue their unbeaten start to the League One season against Reading.

The Red Dragons welcomed Reading to the Racecourse Ground for a 3pm kick-off on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson has had an excellent start to life in League One with the Welsh outfit so far.

Wrexham beat Wycombe 3-2 in their opening game of the campaign as Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds watched on from the stands.

A tougher test awaited them this past weekend when they travelled to the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

However, despite their opposition being among the promotion favourites, Wrexham drew 0-0 with Bolton Wanderers.

In turn, Parkinson and co. were no doubt feeling confident when they took on Reading on August 24th.

When all was said and done in Wales, Wrexham came away with a very comfortable win.

Ollie Palmer fired the home side into the lead after 22 minutes, being set up by Ryan Barnett.

Wrexham doubled their advantage in the 32nd minutes before Andy Cannon added a third to kill the game off four minutes into the second half.

Rob McElhenney sends message to Ryan Barnett during Wrexham vs Reading

Parkinson made a couple of changes to his eleven on Sunday, the most notable being Sebastian Revan dropping out of the team.

Parkinson praised Revan for his display against Bolton but it was not enough for the former Aston Villa man to keep his place in the team.

The Wrexham boss instead opted to start Barnett in the right-wing-back role and was rewarded for his decision after the player set up Palmer for the opener.

After providing said assist, the defender received a special message from McElhenney on social media.

Taking to X/Twitter, the Wrexham owner wrote: “Ryan Barnett = Poetry”

Phil Parkinson has welcome selection headache

After Barnett shone against Reading, Parkinson has a very welcome problem in his defence this season.

The 24-year-old is competing with Revan for a starting berth and right now, it is hard to choose who deserves to start more.

Revan is not a natural right-back and is more comfortable on the left, but captain James McClean currently occupies that role, leaving little room for the former Aston Villa man on that flank.

In turn, Parkinson must be careful in how he manages both Barnett and Revan’s minutes going forward.

But given how well both have started 2024/25, it probably will not matter who Parkinson starts.
