Rob McElhenney sends message to Wrexham fans after watching ‘incredible’ Birmingham City clash

Wrexham claimed a point against Birmingham City on Thursday night but may be frustrated not to have claimed all three.

Wrexham simply had to respond after a dismal 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury Town last week.

That performance simply wasn’t good enough and a big night against Birmingham City seemed like the right time for a response.

Wrexham started fast with Ollie Rathbone curling home a brilliant opening goal to hand Phil Parkinson the lead.

Birmingham hit back through Lyndon Dykes and his deflected header, but Wrexham didn’t buckle.

In fact, Wrexham were the better side in the second half and piled pressure on the Blues, sadly to no avail in terms of chasing a winning goal.

Rob McElhenney on Wrexham draw

There was so much furore around Wrexham’s trip to Birmingham in September given the celebrity interest around the game.

Rob McElhenney exchanged banter with Tom Brady, both men were in attendance and were even joined by David Beckham.

There wasn’t quite the same hype this time around, despite Ryan Reynolds wanting to beat Brady.

McElhenney watched from Los Angeles with Wrexham clash against Birmingham showed in an immersive dome.

McElhenney found the time to record a message for Wrexham fans though, which was aired on Sky Sports (23/01, 22:20).

Donning a Los Angeles Fire Department T-shirt after the recent wildfires, McElhenney suggested that Wrexham’s draw against Birmingham was an ‘incredible game’.

McElhenney added that he will accept a draw against Birmingham, believing they are the best side to have played against Wrexham this term.

McElhenney added ‘Up the Town’ whilst sharing that he hopes to see Wrexham fans again soon.

“I just want to say thank you for an incredible game tonight,” said McElhenney.

“1-1, I’ll take that against Birmingham City, who is probably the best side we’ve played this season.

“Up the Town forever, hope to see you soon,” he added.

McElhenney will be pleased with Wrexham reaction

This time a week ago, McElhenney will have felt as low as Wrexham fans everywhere after the defeat at Shrewsbury.

The LA wildfires were, of course, far more important but in terms of Wrexham, McElhenney will have wanted to see a reaction.

Wrexham stepped up to the plate, pushing Birmingham all the way in the second half.

The January transfer window remains open with McElhenney and Reynolds potentially needing to fund some incoming transfers.

Thursday’s draw proves that Wrexham belong in the promotion mix and a couple of key additions could just help secure promotion to the Championship.
