Wrexham have regained control of the League One promotion race after beating Blackpool 2-1 on Monday afternoon.

The disappointment from Friday afternoon has certainly cleared.

Wrexham drew 1-1 with Bristol Rovers on Friday and handed the promotion initiative over to Wycombe Wanderers.

Matty James predicted more twists and turns, and that was certainly the case as Wrexham beat Blackpool 2-1 on Monday.

James McClean and Ollie Rathbone grabbed the goals as Wrexham took all three points back to North Wales.

Rob Apter’s goal handed Blackpool a consolation late on, but it wasn’t enough to take any shine off Wrexham’s win.

Steve Bruce on Wrexham victory

Wycombe Wanderers lost 4-0 to Charlton Athletic, meaning Wrexham now sit two points clear in second place with two games to play.

Wrexham are so close to a third straight promotion now, and were certainly worthy of Monday’s victory.

Phil Parkinson’s side defended well but also played some nice football, putting together some impressive moves to unlock the Blackpool defence.

Blackpool boss Steve Bruce has offered his verdict on the result, telling BBC Radio Lancashire that Wrexham were simply the better side.

Bruce was ‘brutally honest’, suggesting that Wrexham’s display summed up exactly why Parkinson sits second in the table.

Bruce praised Wrexham’s defending and branded Parkinson’s men ‘a really, really good side’ with another promotion within touching distance.

“If we’re being brutally honest, the better team won on the day and we have to put our hands up to that,” said Bruce.

“We’re disappointed with how we played in a big game, but all credit to Wrexham – you can see why they’re on the cusp of going up.

“They were tough, resilient and strong in their defending, and they have a nice carrot of trying to get promotion again, so the better team won on the day.

“It was a struggle for us today, if I’m being brutally honest, a big struggle against a really, really good side, you have to hold your hands up to them,” he added.

Steve Bruce on first Wrexham goal

Bruce didn’t complain about the result, but did feel aggrieved with Wrexham’s opening goal.

McClean’s former into the box saw Elkan Baggott head the ball clear, with Dan Scarr clattering into the back of him.

The ball was recycled back out to McClean, who drove inside and found the bottom corner of the net.

Bruce felt that Scarr’s clash with Baggott was a ‘blatant’ foul, but admitted his side could have done more to stop the goal going oin.

“I thought it was a blatant foul for the first goal, on big Elkan who headed it clear,” said Bruce. “There was still a bit to do after that, mind you,” he added.

Wrexham now move on to the final home game of the League One campaign with Charlton Athletic visiting this weekend.

Phil Parkinson then takes his side to face Lincoln City on the final day of the season, hoping to have promotion secured.
