Wrexham have fallen to another away defeat as Phil Parkinson watched his side lose 1-0 at Stockport County on Saturday afternoon.

Wrexham were back on the road on Saturday afternoon, travelling to take on Stockport County once again.

The two sides have become rivals in recent years with both clubs on a rise from non-league to League One.

Stockport came out on top this time though as Louie Barry’s first-half goal was enough to hand the hosts all three points.

Wrexham goalkeeper Callum Burton impressed as he kept Stockport at bay for most of the game, but Wrexham just couldn’t find a way back into the game.

All three of Wrexham’s League One defeats this season have come away from home and Phil Parkinson will be keen to turn that situation around moving forward.

Callum Connolly on Stockport County v Wrexham

The battles between these two sides in recent years created an intense atmosphere for Saturday’s clash.

Wrexham just couldn’t find the net and that will leave Parkinson feeling incredibly frustrated.

Fans travelled to Edgeley Park in hope of a big result but bragging rights went to Stockport this time around.

Stockport defender Callum Connolly has now reacted to Saturday’s result and commented on the rivalry between the two clubs.

Connolly feels that Wrexham is now a ‘massive game’ for Stockport and admitted that it was a great feeling to get an ‘upper hand’ over Wrexham.

Speaking on Stockport’s official YouTube channel, Connolly admitted that he and his teammates were ‘buzzing’ with the win due to the ‘rivalry’ between the sides.

“All the lads are buzzing, obviously it’s a massive game for the club,” said Connolly.

“Obviously, both teams… there’s a bit of a rivalry there, so it’s great to get an upper hand over them in the first game of the season against them,” he added.

Stockport County rivalry continues to build

Fans always highlight rivalries when the fixture list comes out but Wrexham don’t have many big local rivalries to look forward to in League One.

Chester are down in the National League North and nobody knows when Wrexham will face them in league action again.

Tranmere Rovers have been another prominent rival over the years but they are in League Two.

Shrewsbury Town offer a local rivalry but they sit bottom of the League One table and could ended up in League Two themselves.

Wrexham fans want games to get up for and Stockport is now emerging as one of those games.

The two sides have been promotion rivals in the National League and League Two, and could even do it again in League One.

These meetings now have even greater importance and Wrexham will be keen to get revenge on County when the two sides meet again in March.
