The reason forgotten Wrexham man can feature vs Peterborough explained as Ryan Barnett absent

Wrexham clashed with Peterborough United in a 3pm League One kick-off on January 4th.

Wrexham beat Peterborough United in the reverse fixture earlier this season and likely fancied their chances of doing the double over The Posh.

The Red Dragons were undefeated at home before kicking off on Saturday, only dropping points on two occasions.

Phil Parkinson’s side knew a win could potentially see his team, barring results elsewhere went their way, end the weekend at the summit of League One.

But the Wrexham manager did make some interesting calls for the game that, on paper, weakened them.

James McClean was dropped to the bench for Jacob Mendy while a presumably injured Ryan Barnett was left out of the squad completely and Sebastian Revan instead started at right-wing-back.

Why Anthony Forde could be selected by Wrexham vs Peterborough United

With Barnett absent, the Welsh outfit have very little cover for him on the right.

Revan hasn’t been great since his summer move from Aston Villa and outside of him, there are no decent options in Wrexham’s League One squad.

However, some fans may have been surprised to see Anthony Forde named on the bench when the team news was announced.

Forde was not registered by the club at the beginning of the League One campaign and has not been eligible as a result.

However, the right-wing-back cover is eligible to feature this month because registration during January is done on a game-to-game basis.

Wrexham need cover for Ryan Barnett

Barnett has seven assists and two goals in 23 league matches this term and has been a crucial part of Wrexham’s attacking threat.

Without him, and taking into account McClean’s also not starting on Saturday, the Red Dragons could struggle to create an awful lot despite being at home.

We have already discussed potential cover for Barnett at Wrexham in the form of a Championship player.

And if the Englishman is indeed injured for any period of time, it’s imperative Parkinson and co. act quickly to find but cover if they wish to keep their promotion fight going strong.
