Three talking points as Wrexham reserves suffer Central League defeat, injured midfielder makes return

Wrexham reserves were in action on Tuesday afternoon, falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Salford City in the Central League.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is probably relieved to have no midweek game this week.

The League One schedule is about to become very hectic with Wrexham playing five games between Saturday December 21 and Saturday January 4.

Last week’s EFL Trophy game against Crewe Alexandra handed Parkinson a chance to rotate his squad and offer opportunities to fringe players.

There was another opportunity for those players on Tuesday afternoon as Wrexham faced Salford City in a Central League clash at Colliers Park.

Here are some of the talking points from Tuesday’s game as Wrexham fell to a 2-1 defeat…

George Evans gets through an hour

One of the key names in the Wrexham starting XI v Salford City was midfielder George Evans.

Evans picked up an injury in October and hasn’t been seen in action since having ‘felt something crack’ against Stevenage.

James Jones suffered a setback on his return from injury last week and Wrexham will have been fearing a repeat as Evans started against Salford City.

Evans managed 65 minutes before being replaced by Alex Moore, securing valuable minutes in the tank.

The former Millwall man will look to make his League One return soon but coming through Tuesday’s game unscathed is a promising start.

Josh Adam takes his chance to impress

Wrexham also handed a start to Josh Adam as he seeks first-team opportunities at Wrexham.

Adam signed for Wrexham in September having been let go by Manchester City at the end of last season.

We have yet to see Adam in League One action but he started in the last two EFL Trophy games against Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra.

The Scot is only on a one-year contract with the option of a second, so he needs to seize every opportunity to impress Parkinson.

Adam scored Wrexham’s goal against Salford City, bagging the equaliser before Salford went on to win the game.

Adam will hope to have caught Parkinson’s eye with a goalscoring display with potential opportunities to come in this busy festive period.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson starts as contract nears end

Leading the Wrexham attack against Salford City was Jon Dadi Bodvarsson as his contract nears its end.

Wrexham signed Bodvarsson on a free transfer in October, handing him a deal until January to help solve Wrexham’s injury problems in attack.

Bodvarsson has featured in three league games for Wrexham but hasn’t played in League One since an 11-minute cameo against against Exeter City on November 23.

It looks likely that the 32-year-old will be let go in January but he did start against Salford City and played more than 80 minutes.

This was another goalless outing for the Icelandic forward though and with Wrexham keen to sign another striker in January, Bodvarsson may not have done enough to land a contract extension.
