Wrexham’s weekend fixture against Grimsby is the perfect chance for redemption for the Red’s play-off semi-final heartbreak in 2022.

After initially struggling in League Two, Wrexham have managed to turn things around with three consecutive wins across all competitions.

The Red Dragons are currently seventh in the league, just three points behind league leaders Gillingham. With new signings settling in, and the return of Paul Mullin, the Reds will be looking to climb the table even further this weekend.

Wrexham take on Grimsby at the Racecourse this weekend

Wrexham take on Grimsby Town at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday afternoon at 3:00PM BST. The Reds currently occupy one of the playoff spots in League Two, having taken 12 points from their opening seven games.

Visitors Grimsby Town are down in 12th place, but only two points behind the Welsh club. It’s a vital game where both teams will be looking to take maximum points.

Reds suffered heart-breaking loss to the Mariners in play-off semi-final

The last time these two teams met was in May 2022 in a National League play-off semi-final clash. Phil Parkinson’s man suffered heartbreak after losing to the Mariners 5-4 in extra time at the Racecourse.

The defeat dashed Wrexham’s promotion hopes that season as Grimsby advanced to the National League play-off final against Solihull Moors. Grimsby would win go on to win play-off final, which took place at West Ham’s London Stadium, clinching promotion to League Two with a 2-1 win over Solihull.

Last season, Grimsby finished 11th in League Two. Now, they are joined by Wrexham in the same division and are looking to make a promotion push of their own this year.

Phil Parkinson says Wrexham are much stronger now than they were then

Saturday’s clash with Grimsby is the perfect opportunity for the Reds to get revenge for the play-off semi-final defeat in 2022.

The loss undoubtedly stung at the time, but Wrexham can show how far they’ve come with a statement win at the weekend.

However, manager Phil Parkinson knows first hand how dangerous this weekend’s opponents can be.

Speaking about the play-off loss, he said (via The Leader): “That was a game for the neutral which had everything but for us to come out on the wrong side of it was a tough blow to take at the time with the manner of defeat.

“But that was then…A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then and we are a lot better team than we were on that day, but so are they.

“Both teams have progressed like you would expect for teams working their way back up the league structure.

“We are stronger than what we were in terms of the starting XI but also the squad…”We have had some good encounters with them over the last couple of years and it is great to be meeting them in the EFL.”

The Mariners have won three of the last four encounters between the two sides, but we’re backing the boys to get the win this weekend.
