Wrexham have secured an historic third-straight promotion after beating Charlton Athletic 3-0 in League One on Saturday.

Wrexham fans turned the Racecourse into a circus on Saturday, turning up the volume as they watched their teams secure a third-straight promotion, becoming the first-ever professional English team to do so.

Nathan Jones’ circus comments before the game came back to haunt him and his sorry Charlton Athletic side as goals came from Sam Smith and Ollie Rathbone inside 20 minutes, with Smith adding a second with 10 minutes to play.

Wrexham fans laud Ollie Rathbone after Charlton Athletic win secures promotion

Rathbone’s eighth league goal of the season got the party underway on Saturday, and what a goal it was as the 28-year-old struck hard and low from range.

“What a half. What a player,” said one Wrexham fan at the break, talking about Rathbone’s goal. Another fan added: “Ollie Rathbone’s motor NEVER STOPS!”

“What a brilliant and fantastic goal,” read one comment. Another Wrexham fan told owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney: “Pay this man bags.”

One Dragons supporter even said: “Rathbone strike what a goal. Player of the Season for me.”

Humphrey Ker names his Wrexham Player of the Season

Rathbone will certainly get a lot of shouts for the Player of the Season award with eight goals and three assists in 40 League One outings, and an overall really positive season for the Englishman.

But speaking before the Charlton Athletic game, community director Humphrey Ker said Eoghan O’Connell was his Player of the Season. Although on the bench for the last two games, O’Connell is another who’ll surely get a lot of votes for the Player of the Season award.

His recent injury was a huge blow for Phil Parkinson but he brought in Dan Scarr who was also excellent on Saturday.
