There’s a number of candidates to be Wrexham’s Player of the Season. Humphrey Ker has now named who he thinks deserves the accolade.

Wrexham’s players have really exceeded expectation this season, currently sitting in 2nd place of the League One table with two games to go, and with the possibility of a third-straight promotion in their hands.

Charlton Athletic visit the Racecourse on Saturday. Addicks boss Nathan Jones called Wrexham a ‘circus’ in the build up to this game and if Wrexham are promoted on Saturday then the scenes there won’t be short of circus-like.

Wrexham can earn promotion from League One on Saturday fi they do beat Charlton and if Wycombe Wanderers lose away a Leyton Orient in their game earlier on Saturday. For Phil Parkinson and his players, it’s arguably their biggest game yet.

But the Dragons have the experience within their ranks to deal with the occasion. Hopefully, too, Parkinson has the quality of Eoghan O’Connell to call upon.

Eoghan O’Connell is Humphrey Ker’s Wrexham Player of the Season

Speaking on Men In Blazers, Wrexham’s community director Humphrey Ker was asked who would get his vote for Player of the Season, and perhaps unsurprisingly in the eyes of many he went with O’Connell. The 29-year-old has played 39 times in League One this season but was benched against Blackpool.

O’Connell picked up a knock against Bristol Rovers but he looks to have avoided injury and we could see him back in the XI against Charlton Athletic on Saturday. Speaking about the Irishman’s season so far, Ker said: “I think Eoghan O’Connell is potentially my Player of the Season, because I think he’s just been so, so strong in the centre of that back-three.

“I think there’s been a couple of games where he’s had rickets, he’s dropped a clanger or two, those have tended to be the game that we’ve lost. And what that says is that when Eoghan plays well, Wrexham play well, Wrexham win.”

Phil Parkinson now faces Wrexham dilemma ahead of Charlton Athletic

Speaking after O’Connell’s injury, Parkinson said he had a great replacement in Dan Scarr, and Scarr’s certainly proving to be just that with a stellar performance against Blackpool.

Scarr shone in Wrexham’s 2-1 win at Blackpool and it’s given Parkinson some food for thought ahead of Saturday where the central option in defence is concerned.

But if O’Connell, who earns £5.3k-a-week at Wrexham per Salary Sport, is fit to start then expect him to do so. Like Ker says, he’s the backbone of this Wrexham side and when he’s on form, so too is the team.

Kick off on Saturday is at 5:30pm and the game will be shown live on Sky Sports.
