Wrexham were expected to face off with Port Vale in an EFL Trophy meeting on January 7th.

The Red Dragons are aiming to win their first-ever cup competition since Phil Parkinson took over as manager in 2021.

Wrexham won the National League title in 2022/23 and finished as runners-up in League Two last season but cup success continues to allude them.

They finished as FA Trophy runners-up during Parkinson’s first season in the dugout but are still waiting to lift a cup.

The Welsh outfit suffered a shock 1-0 FA Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Harrogate Town earlier in 2024/25.

Wrexham were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by a high-flying Sheffield United, leaving the EFL Trophy as their last chance for success this term.

Why Port Vale vs Wrexham has been postponed

The Red Dragons are now in the third round of the EFL Trophy after beating Crewe Alexandra 1-0 in the first knockout phase last month.

Wrexham were due to face off with Port Vale in a 7pm kick-offf on January 7th, but that fixture has now been postponed.

The club have released an official statement on their website confirming why the decision was taken.

They wrote: “We can confirm tonight’s Vertu Trophy Round of 16 tie against Port Vale has been postponed, following consultation with the local Safety Advisory Group.

“The Vale Park pitch passed this morning’s inspection, but the condition of the surface was deemed doubtful, with further snow forecast later this afternoon and into the evening.

“A decision to postpone the fixture was taken due to safety concerns relating to the areas surrounding the stadium, which remain dangerous for those expected to attend.

“A revised date for the match will be confirmed and announced in due course. Tickets purchased for the original date will remain valid for the rearranged fixture.”

When is Wrexham’s next fixture

Port Vale versus Wrexham is yet to be given a rescheduled date, meaning there is now a big game in the club’s schedule.

The FA Cup returns this weekend but as already mentioned, the Hollywood-owned club will play no part as they are already out of the competition.

They were due to play Reading this weekend but The Royals are taking on Burnley in the FA Cup instead.

As a result, Wrexham will now not line out again until the 16th of January when they face Shrewsbury Town at New Meadow in an 8pm League One kick-off.
