Wrexham returned to League One action on Saturday with an away tie against Charlton Athletic.

Wrexham have been in top form for the majority of October and headed into Saturday aiming to cap off an undefeated week.

The Red Dragons had previously beaten Rotherham United 1-0 at the New York Stadium last Saturday.

Phil Parkinson’s men were then held to a 0-0 draw by Huddersfield Town at the Racecourse Ground in midweek.

Parkinson was happy with Wrexham’s results after Huddersfield but no doubt wanted to secure a big three points at The Valley and close the ground on League One leaders, Birmingham City.

Wrexham duo George Dobson and Andy Cannon were walking a suspension tightrope versus Chartlon Athletic, while it was the first time the former had returned to his ex-club since his summer transfer.

Wrexham fans in agreement about Ollie Palmer vs Charlton Athletic

Wrexham took the lead via an own goal after 16 minutes on Saturday before Charlton pulled one back before the break.

While Paul Mullin was not at his best in the first 45 at The Valley, his striking partner, Ollie Palmer, dominated Chartlon’s backline.

The 32-year-old has since come in for high praise on social media from a number of Wrexham fans.

One fan took to X/Twitter to state: “Ollie Palmer has been superb in the gritty work of flick ons and the physical battle.”

A second added: “Palmer has been immense. Could we play him the full 90 and bring it Faal for Mullin in the last 20 instead?”

Another wrote: “Ollie Palmer is absolutely all over both Gillesphie and Mitchell here. Both are getting completely dominated.”

A fourth added: “Ollie Palmer… been immense for Wrexham,” while a fifth simply said: “Ollie Palmer! Superb play!”

The striker was so good he even earned some praise from Charlton fans, with one writing: “Ollie Palmer toying with our back line is a bit worrying to be fair.”

Ollie Palmer still has big role to play at Wrexham

Palmer recently signed a contract extension at Wrexham but given his age and diminishing goal return, some fans may have expected the striker to take a back seat going forward.

Record signing Modou Faal is waiting in the wings and could be a long-term replacement for Palmer.

However, his display against Charlton once again highlighted just how important he remains for Parkinson’s side.

And while his goal return has dried up somewhat, his work outside of finishing remains top class and it is clear he should continue to play a key role for the Red Dragons.
