Wrexham dropped points in the League One promotion race after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Cambridge.

Phil Parkinson’s side missed the chance to move further clear of Wycombe after the Chairboys were also held to a draw by Shrewsbury Town.

Charlton and Stockport have closed the gap on Wrexham as the League One table has tightened at the top once again.

Parkinson praised Ryan Longman and Sam Smith for their roles in the equaliser that earned a point but it could have been all three had it not been for the officials’ interventions at the end of the game.

Wrexham fans react to disallowed goal

Wrexham thought they had won the game at the very end when Eoghan O’Connell headed home an Elliot Lee corner however, the goal was ruled out sparking confusion around the stadium.

There appeared to be no infringement or offside and it was later revealed why Wrexham’s goal was disallowed because the ball had gone out of play from the corner kick.

However, that did not stop Wrexham fans taking to X to vent their frustrations and question the decision, one fan simply wrote: “How was that last goal ruled out?”

Another fan wrote: “Terrible calls. The refs really don’t want Wrexham winning.” This was in relation to a soft penalty also being given against Lewis Brunt to give Cambridge a 2-1 lead.

There was more fury directed towards the officials as one fan wrote: “That last call WAS a goal! Someone didn’t want Wrexham to win… Couldn’t see anything wrong in that play.”

Elliot Lee missed big Wrexham chance to win the game

Before the controversy of the disallowed goal, a huge change fell to the substitute Lee to win the game for the Red Dragons.

The ball broke to the midfielder around the penalty spot, unmarked but he leaned back on the strike and blazed the ball high over the bar.

Lee has eight goals in all competitions this season and would have fancied himself to be more composed when the opportunity broke to him.

He struck a last minute winner at Crawley Town back in February and should have been the hero once more for Parkinson’s side.
