Shrewsbury Town produce a favour for Wrexham, but there is one problem for Phil Parkinson after Cambridge United draw

Wrexham stumbled on Tuesday night as Phil Parkinson’s side only managed a 2-2 draw away at Cambridge United.

Wrexham beat Exeter City 2-0 on Saturday afternoon to go into the trip to Cambridge United with major confidence.

This promotion push was never going to be straightforward, though, and some ups and downs were bound to occur.

Wrexham took the lead against Cambridge as George Dobson scored his first league goal for the club.

Cambridge hit back either side of the break, though, as Liam Bennett and Josh Stokes turned the game on its head.

Wrexham had to dig deep, and Sam Smith – formerly of Cambridge – found the leveller, but there was to be no winner.

Shrewsbury Town provide Wrexham favour

Wrexham had the ball in the net late on, but the goal was disallowed, seemingly for the ball going out of play from Elliot Lee’s corner.

Lee himself had a golden chance to win it, but blazed over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

It just wasn’t to be for Wrexham, but the frustration of a draw was at least cushioned by Wycombe Wanderers failing to beat Shrewsbury Town.

Wrexham fans don’t often cheer for Shrewsbury, but Tuesday was one of those rare moments as Michael Appleton’s side faced a trip to Adams Park.

Shrewsbury seem to be heading for relegation, but they withstood immense pressure – 32 shots from Wycombe – to snatch a 0-0 draw.

That keeps Wrexham’s three-point lead intact, and whilst Wycombe still have a game in hand, they at least didn’t make any ground on Wrexham.

Charlton Athletic and Stockport County close the gap

There is one problem from Tuesday’s results, though, and it’s that the chasing pack have closed the gap.

Charlton Athletic beat Mansfield Town 2-1, whilst Stockport County racked up a 3-0 victory over Stevenage.

Those results just serve to close the gap with Charlton now six points behind Wrexham and Stockport seven points adrift.

Wrexham still have to play Charlton at home, so this may not be a two-horse race for second place after all.

Phil Parkinson warned his Wrexham players of that exact situation in March, despite beating Stockport at home.

Wrexham just need to keep those chasing clubs in mind but will be focused on hitting back with a victory against Burton Albion this weekend.
