Here is why Wrexham’s last-minute winning goal vs Cambridge United was disallowed

Wrexham were held to a 2-2 draw by Cambridge United on Tuesday, having a goal ruled out in second-half injury time.

The Red Dragons were clear favorites going into the match against a side that sat 23rd in the division prior to kick-off.

Paul Mullin was left out again but Wrexham still got off to a great start, with George Dobson producing a thunderous strike to hand the Welsh outfit the lead inside four minutes.

However, as has so often been the case in 2024/25, Phil Parkinson’s men couldn’t turn their dominance into more goals.

They were then made to pay when some sloppy defending saw Liam Bennett make it 1-1 in the 40th minute.

Things went from bad to worse early in the second half when Lewis Brunt gave away a penalty after just two minutes of play resuming, which Cambridge scored.

Sam Smith stepped up yet again to put Wrexham back on level terms but in the end, the away outfit were forced to settle for a point.

Why Wrexham goal vs Cambridge United was ruled out

The result didn’t prove too damaging as Wycombe Wanderers were also held in their meeting with Shrewsbury Town.

However, it was still a wasted chance for the Welsh outfit, who would have gone two points clear of Wycombe (even with the Chairboys’ game in hand) with a win.

It did look as though Wrexham had won the tie in injury time after Elliot Lee’s corner was put into the Cambridge net.

However, the goal was ruled out – a decision that caused much confusion amongst players, Parkinson and fans.

But an explanation for the goal being ruled out has since been provided by The Athletic’s Richard Sutcliffe, who wrote: “Flag went up as soon as ball left Lee’s boot, as it bent out of play before heading into the six-yard box.”

Fans are probably pleased to see that the goal was not ruled out for any questionable decision.

But it does mean they are still technically, despite being second currently, chasing Wycombe in the race for automatic promotion.

There is plenty of football still to play this season, however, and just based on fixtures, Wrexham should be confident about taking the second and final automatic promotion spot.
