A draw looked more and more likely, but Wrexham have made a habit of scoring late goals and they did so once again courtesy of a stunning volley from Elliot Lee.

Nearing the 89th minute of the game, James McClean whipped in a deep cross from the left hand side. The ball was headed clear to the edge of the box where Lee chested it down and smashed an absolute thunderbolt past the helpless Sutton goalkeeper.

Fans were savouring the goal on social media and calling it one of the best strikes they’d seen all season.

‘Hang it in the Louvre’, one fan said.

‘Just an absolute banger,’ another added.

‘Goal of the year’, a third commented:

“You won’t see a purer strike”

After the game, Wrexham assistant manager Steve Parkin said: “I think they believe in the dressing room that they go right to whatever it may be, the 100th minute if necessary, and I think they always feel as though they’re going to have a chance.

“The resilience to keep the ball in the box and keep it alive was there for everybody to see, but I think the key thing is we don’t want to be relying on that all the time, and we have already relied on it quite a bit this season, but at the end of the day there’s loads of different ways to get three points and we’ll take it.

“To come up with such a quality goal at the end to get the points for us was a big relief. You won’t see a purer strike.”
